Good News I'm keeping my spleen.

#1 Post by themanintheseersuckersuit » Thu Feb 26, 2009 4:08 pm

I was diagnosed with IPT 2 years ago. It means I had a very low platelet count. I was treated with WinRho and got some better. The next step would be a spleenectomy. Today my platelet count was normal, so I get to keep my spleen for a while longer. I may even be able to run with scissors again.

Good news! It might help to vent it here once in a while.

I will now have to look up IPT. But I know spleens have turned out to be important in the immune response, so hang on to it as long as possible.

IPT is thought to be an autoimmune disorder and the spleen does the job of removing the platelets that the body has decided are now unwelcome. Taking out the spleen moderates the body's immune response to the platelets and you end up with more platelets.

Ugh. Dr. House and his team seem to be suspecting autoimmune disorders ever other week.

I'm glad you're keeping your spleen.

But you still shouldn't run with scissors!

ITP

"Immune Thrombocytopenic Purpura", or sometimes "Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura"

not IPT

Reminds me of a patient I saw last night:

Patient: "I've got that lung thing. You know, COD... or CPD. Or is it DCP?"

Resident physician: "You mean COPD?" [Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease]

Patient: "No! Not that."
* Either Arglebargle IV or someone else.

Apparently he has CRS. :P

I guess you'll just have to be careful about venting your spleen here on the bored.

IPT was suspected and ruled out in a recent episode of House.
