That is even more bad than thinking it's half and saying have.
They are not saying "have" they are saying "halve". Since they sound pretty much the same,(well, maybe exactly) I can understand why you think they are saying "have".
When I say them, they do not sound the same. I do give the L some love.

halve   [hav, hahv]

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/have

have   [hav]

primary pronunciation is the same for for both words.

But, if you're pretentious like me, you give a little to the "l," which I also do when saying "calm." Beloved Son gets on my case because he can hear me pronounce the "h" in "wh" at the beginning of words, so"what" comes out "whaht," instead of "wut."

It's just me trying to eradicate any vestige of a Long Island accent.
I am about 25% sure of this.

I do not think anyone standing in a corner can look cute. Pea, you are cute enough to stand right in the middle of the room.

How does [whaht] sound the "h"? The distinction you made seems to be more of the use of \ä\ instead of the schwa.

Did you see the Family Guy episode in which Stewie (and later Meg) refer to Cool hWhip?

Maybe it's what some people call my New York accent, but I don't think so.

I also do not think I speak pretentiously.

I just give the L a little love when I save halve. Almost feels like I might choke on a bit of spit.

When you save halve of what?

Actually, I think I say the two words slightly differently from each other, but I'm not sure others would hear what I hear when I say them,

Well, this one was too ripe to pass. You know, since it called back to the original question.

Now you know how I feel about chided. :D
