Accenture Match Play

#1 Post by peacock2121 » Thu Feb 26, 2009 7:19 am

Quite a day.

Tiger played well enough to get into the next round.

Baby Boy almost lost his spot after being 4 up with 5 to play against Angel Cabrera. What a mess.

Sergio is out.

Ernie is in.

I thought it interesting that he chose to return to this tournament. I know he is the defending champ, that he likes the format and seems to thrive on match play. And I think the sponsor, Accenture, is one of his sponsors which I suppose is important to him as well.

But it is a new course, and a hilly one at that for someone coming back from injury, he would potentially have to play 6 rounds to win although some and perhaps most would not go a full 18. Then again more than one could go past 18...

Would seem to have had made more sense to wait until the Florida swing when he could play close to home on flat courses that he knows well.

Then again I suppose he knows best what works for him as he has had some modest success in his career...

I caught the beginning of the re-broadcast last night, and the Golf Channel did a nice job of explaining why it was easy to predict that this would be his first tournament. The biggest reason is that you do not need to post a score, but rather just play well enough to beat the other player. In other words, you only have to beat one guy (or really 6 guys), and not 100 other players.
