Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 2/26/09

#1 Post by Save the Children » Thu Feb 26, 2009 12:59 am

Hi, it's Sally Struthers here for Lyrically Speaking. Do you want to make more money? Sure, we all do! Lyrically Speaking's Theme Thursday School can prepare you for a better job today by playing at home. In your spare time, you can get your diploma in rock and roll, rhythm and blues, pop, heavy metal, groupie's assistant, and squirrel denutting. Or you can get your degree in business management or accounting. Please call now, and your generous donation to Lyrically Speaking can help make sure I never go hungry on those horrible trips I have to make to those wastelands in Africa....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 3 points for the theme, and I'll take the rest of that yogurt if you're not going to finish it....

1. People dancing all in the street
See the rhythm all in their feet
Life is good, wild and sweet
Let the music play on

2. And then a man called our exchange
But didn't want to leave his name
I guess that two can play the game...

3. I know a man
He came from my home town
He wore his passion for his woman
Like a thorny crown

4. You have gone and made me such a fool
I'm so lost in your love
And oh, we belong together
Won't you believe in my song?

5. I did my best
But I guess my best wasn't good enough
'Cause here we are back where we were before
Seems nothing ever changes

6. Deutschemarks or dollars
American express will do nicely, thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me, do you wanna see me do the shimmy again?

7. Your sister's gone out, she's on a date
You just sit at home and masturbate
Your phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
For that call

8. Hey pretty baby with the high heels on
You give me fever
Like I've never, ever known
You're just a product of loveliness
I like the groove of your walk,
Your talk, your dress

9. The time has come for me
To break out of the shell
I have to shout

10. L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star

11. Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way

12. It's like a diamond ring
It's a precious thing
And we never want to lose it
It's like a favorite song
That we love to sing
Every time we hear the music

13. Outside's the rain, the driving snow
I can hear the wild wind blowing
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain't going out there no more

14. Do what you like,
Doing it nat'rally
But if it's too easy
They're gonna disagree

15. But I want to let go
You'll go on hurtin' me
You'd be better off alone
If I'm not who you thought I'd be

16. Maybe things ain't been so good at home
And the people that you love never cared at all
You wanna run away don't care where you go
You wanna run away that's all you know

17. You hear the door slam and realize there's nowhere left to run
You feel the cold hand and wonder if you'll ever see the sun

18. Taught me how to shoot to kill
A specialist with a deadly skill
A skill I needed to have to be a survivor

19. Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead

20. I have your photograph
I have it hanging on my wall
You neither cry or laugh
Finding it hard to forget it all

Theme?
I promise not to eat all the food for the kids next time!

Dammit, beast!
I started out fairly well, then hit a wall. And I'll be damned if I see what any of this has to do with Sally Struthers! Or jobs! They're from a similar time period is all I got....

1. People dancing all in the street
See the rhythm all in their feet
Life is good, wild and sweet
Let the music play on

All Night Long, Lionel Richie

2. And then a man called our exchange
But didn't want to leave his name
I guess that two can play the game...

Familiarish

3. I know a man
He came from my home town
He wore his passion for his woman
Like a thorny crown

Slip-Slidin Away, Paul Simon

4. You have gone and made me such a fool
I'm so lost in your love
And oh, we belong together
Won't you believe in my song?

Lady, Kenny Rogers. Don't ask how I know that sappy shit, please....

5. I did my best
But I guess my best wasn't good enough
'Cause here we are back where we were before
Seems nothing ever changes

All is forgiven--I absolutely love this song. Just Once, James Ingram.

6. Deutschemarks or dollars
American express will do nicely, thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me, do you wanna see me do the shimmy again?

Private Dancer, Tina Turner

7. Your sister's gone out, she's on a date
You just sit at home and masturbate
Your phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
For that call

I almost spit my coffee out! Captain Jack, Billy Joel! At last!

8. Hey pretty baby with the high heels on
You give me fever
Like I've never, ever known
You're just a product of loveliness
I like the groove of your walk,
Your talk, your dress

Nope

9. The time has come for me
To break out of the shell
I have to shout

Between this and Finally, I heard them 68,000 times in gay clubs. I'm Coming Out, Diana Ross

10. L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star

Do You Know the Way to San Jose, Dionne Warwick. Shot my "time period" theory to hell with this one...

11. Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way

On the Road Again, Willie Nelson and the guy who owned the restaurant where I worked when he got tanked up at the parties.

12. It's like a diamond ring
It's a precious thing
And we never want to lose it
It's like a favorite song
That we love to sing
Every time we hear the music

Semi-familiar

13. Outside's the rain, the driving snow
I can hear the wild wind blowing
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain't going out there no more

Familiar

14. Do what you like,
Doing it nat'rally
But if it's too easy
They're gonna disagree

I'm Alright, Kenny Loggins

15. But I want to let go
You'll go on hurtin' me
You'd be better off alone
If I'm not who you thought I'd be

Oh Sherry, Steve Perry solo?

16. Maybe things ain't been so good at home
And the people that you love never cared at all
You wanna run away don't care where you go
You wanna run away that's all you know

Nopers

17. You hear the door slam and realize there's nowhere left to run
You feel the cold hand and wonder if you'll ever see the sun

Thriller, Michael Jackson

18. Taught me how to shoot to kill
A specialist with a deadly skill
A skill I needed to have to be a survivor

Nope

19. Maybe I should have called you first
But I was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while I drove
The long straight road ahead

Nope

20. I have your photograph
I have it hanging on my wall
You neither cry or laugh
Finding it hard to forget it all

And again nope

Theme?

Spoiler
1. People dancing all in the street
See the rhythm all in their feet
Life is good, wild and sweet
Let the music play on
ALL NIGHT LONG - LIONEL RICHIE. MY FAVORITE BILLY AND THE BOINGERS (BILL THE CAT'S BAND BEFORE DEATHTONGUE) LYRIC WAS "MIDDLE OF THE ROAD / IT STANKS / LET'S RUN LIONEL RICHIE OVER WITH A TANK"

2. And then a man called our exchange
But didn't want to leave his name
I guess that two can play the game...
PART-TIME LOVER - STEVIE WONDER

He came from my home town
He wore his passion for his woman

Won't you believe in my song?
LADY - KENNY ROGERS

5. I did my best
But I guess my best wasn't good enough
'Cause here we are back where we were before
Seems nothing ever changes
JUST ONCE - JAMES INGRAM. I'M NOT 100% SURE, BUT I THINK THIS WAS THE MAIN THEME SONG FROM MY 2ND FAVORITE ALL TIME TEEN ROMANCE, THE WOEFULLY UNDERAPPRECIATED "THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN". INCIDENTALLY, MY ALL-TIME FAVORITE (BETTER OFF DEAD) FEATURES THE SAME WOMAN AS THE FEMALE ROMANTIC LEAD. AND OF COURSE SHE WAS IN THE BILL AND TED MOVIES TOO. DIANE FRANKLIN, WHERE ART THOU?

6. Deutschemarks or dollars
American express will do nicely, thank you
Let me loosen up your collar
Tell me, do you wanna see me do the shimmy again?
PRIVATE DANCER - TINA TURNER

7. Your sister's gone out, she's on a date
You just sit at home and masturbate
Your phone is gonna ring soon, but you just can't wait
For that call
OH, THAT'S WHY YOU DIDN'T USE IT YESTERDAY. SORRY CLEM, THIS PIECE OF SHIT IS EVEN SHITTIER THAN YOUR AVERAGE, RUN-OF-THE-MILL BILLY JOEL SONG, WHICH IS PLENTY SHITTY IN ITS OWNSELF. CAPTAIN JACK - BILLY JOEL

8. Hey pretty baby with the high heels on
You give me fever
Like I've never, ever known
You're just a product of loveliness
I like the groove of your walk,
Your talk, your dress
THE WAY YOU MAKE ME FEEL - MICHAEL JACKSON. ALMOST THE SAME TITLE AS THAT HORRIBLE SONG FROM YENTL

9. The time has come for me
To break out of the shell
I have to shout
I'M COMING OUT - NO IDEA WHO DID THIS. GIVEN THE THEME, I'M TRYING TO REMEMBER IF TOM PETTY WAS IN IT. THE WORLD WOULD BE A BETTER PLACE IF IT WERE HIM WHO DID THIS.

10. L.A. is a great big freeway.
Put a hundred down and buy a car.
In a week, maybe two, they'll make you a star
DO YOU KNOW THE WAY TO SAN JOSE - NANCY SINATRA. NOW THAT I SEE THE THEME, I GUESS YOU MEAN THE DIONNE WARWICK VERSION.

11. Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world be turnin' our way
ON THE ROAD AGAIN - WILLIE NELSON

12. It's like a diamond ring
It's a precious thing
And we never want to lose it
It's like a favorite song
That we love to sing
Every time we hear the music
WE'RE IN THIS LOVE TOGETHER - AL JARREAU

13. Outside's the rain, the driving snow
I can hear the wild wind blowing
Turn out the light, bolt the door
I ain't going out there no more
COVER ME - BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN

14. Do what you like,
Doing it nat'rally
But if it's too easy
They're gonna disagree
NO IDEA

15. But I want to let go
You'll go on hurtin' me
You'd be better off alone
If I'm not who you thought I'd be
OH SHERRY - STEVE PERRY

16. Maybe things ain't been so good at home
And the people that you love never cared at all
You wanna run away don't care where you go
You wanna run away that's all you know

Theme? I THINK ALL THESE PEOPLE WERE INVOLVED IN PROMINENT HUNGER-RELIEF EFFORTS. IF I NEED TO BE MORE SPECIFIC THAN THAT I'LL SAY USA FOR AFRICA (WILLIE NELSON WAS PROBABLY IN USA FOR AFRICA, BUT I CAN'T REMEMBER HIM THERE, AND HE WAS DEFINITELY IN THAT FARM AID THING.)

Rats! What about Bob?
1. People dancing all in the street
See the rhythm all in their feet

Let the music play on

All Night Long - Lionel Richie

2. And then a man called our exchange
But didn't want to leave his name

Part Time Lover - Stevie Wonder (and Kevin Covais, which you won't get...ha!)

3. I know a man
He came from my home town
He wore his passion for his woman
Like a thorny crown

Slip Sliding Away - Paul Simon

4. You have gone and made me such a fool
I'm so lost in your love
And oh, we belong together
Won't you believe in my song?

Lady - Lionel Richie (I did have Kenny Rogers here but if, as I think, we must fit the theme, I'm not sure he will qualify and I think Lionel Richie wrote it)

5. I did my best
But I guess my best wasn't good enough
'Cause here we are back where we were before
Seems nothing ever changes

6. Deutschemarks or dollars
American express will do nicely, thank you

OMG! Is this Captain Jack??? I have still never heard it (athough I was tempted to spend 79 cents on Amazon to download the mp3 just to see all the fuss was about), but I went and looked up the lyrics because I just knew you would use it at some point. And, after yesterday's game, I decided I was mistaken. I might not have recognized it anyway, except I thought the lyrics were funny. I sure hope that Clem finds wireless in California!

Oh, before I forget.....Captain Jack - Billy Joel

I Drove All Night - Cyndi Lauper (I think this makes four so far, yay! Cyndi is the new Billy Joel!)

20. I have your photograph
I have it hanging on my wall
You neither cry or laugh
Finding it hard to forget it all

Dang, that stupid Peg song is going through my head now and I can't hear anything else....

Theme?

The We are the World people. Although I can't imagine that you would pass up a legitimate chance to use your favourite song in the whole, wide world... And you feel the need to use Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson twice when Bob Dylan and Waylon Jennings are just sitting there on the sidelines? What the french? Not to mention that it's been far too long (like maybe forever) since Day-o made an appearance in an LS game. Ha!
I edited, but only because
Spoiler
Dionne Warwick
is kind of a diva and I think she might kick my ass if I left her name misspelled.

Woohoo! I think I actually GOT all the references in Fanny's answers this time.... even the Chicken Little one (He was one of my Mom's early AI faves that season), and especially teh hidden Shithouse Rats reference....

And I can also laugh at Fanny's puzzlement due to her not being able to get the full gist of the theme..... :P :P :P
