Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 2/20/09

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Feb 20, 2009 1:27 am

For today's Free For All Friday game, I decided to do my first ever Meister's Choice game. You would think that with 5 previous contests under my belt that at some point I just chose a bunch of songs I wanted to put in a game just for the heck of it, but I am so bound by puzzle themes that I never have. So I just made a list of a bunch of songs I have never got to use in an LS game before that I really like, and threw it together in one big mishmash game....

The songs below fall into several different categories. A lot of them are somewhat obscure, a lot of them are songs I don't get to hear much anymore, some of them are forgotten classics that fell into the dustbin of music history, and some of them are just slightly more common songs I really like but just never found a game to put them in yet. But still, there are some real doozies in this game, and I expect there will probably be several songs that end up being shutouts. For that reason, I included 25 songs in this game to give you all at least a fair shot at racking up a halfway decent score....

This game is open until Monday morning at the usual time....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist.....

What the french is going on here?
What kind of crazy shit do you listen to? I had so many blanks that it made it hard to proofread so I ended up taking out the ones I left unanswered.

1. Hold me darlin', come on listen to me,
I won't do you no harm;
Trust me darlin', come on listen to me
Come on listen to me, come on listen, listen

Whatever Gets You Through the Night - John Lennon

3. She's poetry in motion
Beautiful sight to see
I get so excited
Viewing her anatomy

She's a Bad Mamma Jamma - This is killing me! My manager at Walgreens used to sing this all the time BITD, so technically I could say Miss Jones did it.

4. I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well

Way Too Easy - Fanny and the Abstainers

9. I just wanna be
The one that you wanna see
I just wanna have you near me
But you fly away almost everyday

Stop to Love- Luther Vandross (never took you for a Luther fan. Did you know that he got his big break singing backup for David Bowie?)

11. But they found bright lights
And endless nights
And men just used her innocent ways
He found it all so pretty, hypnotized by the city
They lost sight of the reason
They lost count of the days

Two Souls - Rick Springfield

13. I walk into a club and I found paradise
I’m seein stars, I can’t believe my eyes
I’m seein stars

Starry Eyed Surprise - Crazytown (invoking the Collins rule once again, atlhough I think the whole band is credited in the Coke commercial) I love this song and am so glad I didn't have to chew your ass for picking Butterfly instead. Ha!

14. Put your left leg down your right leg up
Tilt your head back let's finish the cup
M.C.A. with the bottle D. rocks the can
Adrock gets nice with Charlie Chan

Brass Monkey - Beastie Boys

16. Oooooh! Ooh I want to find a better place
Oooooh! Ooh I'm searching for a better place
Oooooh! Ooh I'm tired of living in the sand
Oooooh! Ooh I'm searching for a better land

Oooooooh! (This Seat Has Splinters) - Chronic Diarrhea

18. Realize I don't want to be a miser
Confide wisely you'll be the wiser
Young blood is the lovin' upriser
How come everybody wanna keep it like the kaiser

Give It Away - Red Hot Chili Peppers (I prefer the Under the Bridge part of the medley you used the other day)

22. I was lying on the grass on Sunday morning of last week
Indulging in my self defeat
My mind was thugged all laced and bugged all twisted wrong and beat
A comfortable three feet deep

Steal My Sunshine - LEN

24. Receiving department, 3 a.m.
Staff cuts have socked up the overage

No callbacks, complaints.
Everywhere is calm

Steadily Depressing Low Down Mind Messing Working at the Mecca Blues - Chemical Beast

25. They don't play baseball
They don't wear sweaters
They're not good dancers
They don't play drums!!

Fish Heads - I don't know who did this, I don't know if I ever knew and I don't know if I ever want to know. This song gave me creeps (and the video didn't help!)
Push it real good!

I'm not sure how I posted twice. I did hit submit by mistake, but immediately hit the stop icon, and my screen stayed right where it was (no indication that anything posted). I then finished the last couple of questions and everything was hunky dory. Apparently it DID post the first time, even though I never got an indication that it did. :? :? :? :? :?

And endless nights
And men just used her innocent ways
He found it all so pretty, hypnotized by the city
They lost sight of the reason
They lost count of the days

1. Hold me darlin', come on listen to me,
I won't do you no harm;
Trust me darlin', come on listen to me
Come on listen to me, come on listen, listen
Whatever Gets You Through the Night - John Lennon (This song is just so cool! So UnLennonlike, but so cool....)

2. Your conscience awakes
And you see your mistakes
And you wish someone would buy your confessions.
The days miss their mark
And the night gets so dark
Part of the Plan - Dan Fogelberg (I missed the opportunity to ask which if these artists is the only one I've ever seen in concert. The answer.... Fogelberg, after my mom won tickets off the radio when I was only 9...)

3. She's poetry in motion
Beautiful sight to see
I get so excited
Viewing her anatomy
She's A Bad Mama Jamma - Carl Carlton (I will always associate this song with Fridays at Ponderosa because they played it over the PA one time me and my Dad were there, and all of a sudden my Dad points at me to look to my left. Some 4 or 5 year old girl got up in the middle of the dining area and was bobbing and dancing around in perfect timing to this song. It's one of the cutest things I've ever seen, and I think my opinion of just ow cute kids are is well known on this Bored....)

4. I am just a worthless liar
I am just an imbecile
I will only complicate you
Trust in me and fall as well
Sober - Tool (A shutout, and such a shame. I first heard this song when Beavis & Butthead critiqued the video on their show, and then shortly thereafter heard it on the college radio. One of my favorites from a music genre I don't much care for... early 90's hard rock...)

5. I can't love, shot full of holes
Don't feel nothing, I just feel cold
Don't feel nothing, just old scars
Toughening up around my heart
I Want Love - Elton John

6. I can scheme of ways to make her mine
Cause I know she's livin phat
Her boyfriend's tall and he plays ball
So how am I gonna compete with that
I Wish - Skee Lo (One of the best things about our newly remodeled KFC is the new satellite radio they have playing over the PA. It's almost always on 80's or 90's, and I remember several times in a row when it was on the 90's station, they played this song.... one I'd completely forgotten about...)

7. now he's in control he is my lover
nations stand against him he's your brother
been a long time, been a long time now
i'll get to you somehow
Situation - Yaz (I prefer Move Out, but there's another interesting story behind this one... at least to me. I hadn't heard this song in who knows how long until my trip to Chicago in 2006. I heard it played on a station I picked up out of Springfield... then AGAIN just a few hours later on a station out of Chicago.)

8. Look what you're doing to me
I'm utterly at your whim
All of my defenses down
Automatic - Pointer Sisters (This song was big in 1984, and it completely fell off the radio here after that. Seriously, I have never heard it on the radio around here or anywhere else since then.... only on Mecca Radio and Music Choice...)

9. I just wanna be
The one that you wanna see
I just wanna have you near me
But you fly away almost everyday
Stop To Love - Luther Vandross (The mid-to-late 80's had some kick ass R&B. Too bad I hardly ever get to hear this one anymore....)

10. Everywhere I go
Every smile I see
I know you are there
Smilin' back at me
Together Again - Janet Jackson (Another shutout! Part of the soundtrack to my first year at Mecca in 1998...)

11. But they found bright lights
And endless nights
And men just used her innocent ways
He found it all so pretty, hypnotized by the city
They lost sight of the reason
They lost count of the days
Souls - Rick Springfield (See "Automatic"... though I haven't even heard this one at all since the early 80's...)

12. Take for instance just because I'm white
They say son you can't jam like that your skin is too light
But what kind of crap is that for someone to say
I think they're jealous because I jam the groove way
I Can Do Anything - Kevin Paige (There are two songs I barely remembered 1990, a year when I hardly listened to any new music at all, that always nagged at me because I couldn't remember who did them. This one, and another song called "Don't Shut Me Out". Both were done by this guy, Kevin Paige.... and they were teh only two semi-hits he had. Amazing...)

13. I walk into a club and I found paradise
I’m seein stars, I can’t believe my eyes
I’m seein stars
Starry Eyed Surprise - Paul Oakenfold (VH1C used this song in a promo commercial a lot about 3 or 4 years ago, and I thought it was a pretty cool song...)

14. Put your left leg down your right leg up
Tilt your head back let's finish the cup
M.C.A. with the bottle D. rocks the can
Adrock gets nice with Charlie Chan
Brass Monkey - Beastie Boys (This has been the music played when Ryan Ludwick comes up to bat since the Cardinals called him up in May of 2007, and with any luck, it will continue to be so as long as he's with the team, because it is the greatest player intro song EVER....)

15. Well
I feel fine
no it ain't no crime.
I was dreamin' of a demon and I ate a dime.
The dime floats
the colonel boasts -
Send 'em up the hill boys, this ain't no joke
Shiny Shiny - Haysi Fantaysee (The song, the video, the chick in the group..... this song just reeks awesomeness! It troubles me to see that about every site I hit while finding these lyrics dissed it....)

16. Oooooh! Ooh I want to find a better place
Oooooh! Ooh I'm searching for a better place
Oooooh! Ooh I'm tired of living in the sand
Oooooh! Ooh I'm searching for a better land
Heaven (Must Be There) - Eurogliders

17. Gonna sit down in the kitchen
and fix me something good to eat
and make my head a little high
and make this whole day complete
Shanty - Jonathan Edwards (I'd have died if ghost would've been the only one to get this one, but TBone also pulled it out of the fire....)

18. Realize I don't want to be a miser
Confide wisely you'll be the wiser
Young blood is the lovin' upriser
How come everybody wanna keep it like the kaiser
Give It Away Now - Red Hot Chili Peppers

19. Everybody's got a little light
Under the sun
Under the sun
Under the sun
Under the sun
Flashlight - Parliament (If this song doesn't make you want to get up and groove, you better check your pulse....)

20. You're weird, in tears, too near and too far away,
He said, saw red, went home stayed in bed all day,
Your t'shirt, dish dirt,
Always love the one you hurt
Ready To Go - Republica (One of the greatest stadium songs of all time, and the "Start Me Up" of the 90's. If your baseball team wasn't playing this before the first inning at some point in the last 15 years, they should be contracted from the league....)

21. Your TV set is acting up and you don't understand
You're so upset because you can't watch "All My Children" and
You wonder if there's something I can do for you
Well all that I can say...
Rockit 2 U - The Jets (Just when MTV was starting to show Remote Control and Julie Brown and get away from what made them big in the first place, music videos, there was Nick Rocks on sister station Nickelodeon in the latter half of the 80's. One of the biggest stars of Nick Rocks was a family group called The Jets, and they may have all looked plastic and had a bad sense of 80's fashion, but they kicked ass! This one is my favorite of theirs....)

22. I was lying on the grass on Sunday morning of last week
Indulging in my self defeat
My mind was thugged all laced and bugged all twisted wrong and beat
A comfortable three feet deep
Steal My Sunshine - LEN

23. Each and every heart it seems,
Is bounded by a world of dreams.
Each and every rising sun,
Is greeted by a lonely one.
The Voice - The Moody Blues (I know a lot of people prefer the psychadelic Moodys, but I grew up in the 80's and love the pop stuff better... and this is definitely my favorite of theirs...)

24. Receiving department, 3 a.m.
Staff cuts have socked up the overage

Daysleeper - REM (An oft requested song on the overnight show on Mecca Radio....)

25. They don't play baseball
They don't wear sweaters
They're not good dancers
They don't play drums!!
Fish Heads - Barnes & Barnes (A staple of Turkey TV back in the days when Nickelodeon was all the shit, and unfortunately a video VH1C seems to have lost in its archive....

JJC Points:

Since this game was not easy, and attendance was awfully low, I went easy on the JJCP's...

Estonut got the 5 point supermax... I especially loved the Second Chance/possum answer...

Melo got 2 JJC points for ripping on mini. Ripping on Dubya's getting too easy....

Saucy got 3 JJC points, and might've gotten 5 had she not run out of steam...

ghost invoking Eminem was worth a JJC point...

Fanny got 3 JJC points, in part for dissing my favorites and for misunderstanding how the Phil Collins rule works....

elwood was good with the ES and clem answers and got 3 JJC points...

TBone got 33 JJC points, a lot of it for the Gunther Toody answer which had me rolling...

Clem got 5 JJC points again....

Pea also got a supermax for her efforts....

How does it work? I was under the impression that it meant you were covered whether the person did it as an individual or as a part of the band in which they were a member. Like the Don Henley/Eagles or Alice Cooper/ACG thing.

Seth Binzer did Starry Eyed Surprise, but I wasn't sure if it was him as an individual with the Oakenfeld guy or with Crazytown as a group. I seem to remember the entire group being credited on the chryon in the Diet Coke commercial, but I wasn't sure.

So wouldn't Seth Binzer/Crazytown be the same thing re: the Collins Rule?

Also, I get no cred for remembering all the adjectives in the Jim Croce car wash song? (I don't want JJCP, just a little love.)

As for the PCR, it only works if you give the lead singer. Answering Phil Collins for Invisible Touch is fine, but answering Genesis for Sussudio would not be. Since you gave a band, you were not covered by the Phil Collins rule....

Since I have never heard Croce's car wash before, that may explained why I missed a reference to it..... as you can see, I only listened to fine, high quality music.... :P
