2009 Bored Oscar Pool

#1 Post by NellyLunatic1980 » Mon Feb 16, 2009 2:03 pm

Movies.com was recently bought out by Fandango, and it appears as though they are no longer having their annual Oscar-picking contest. Yahoo! also no longer appears to have an Oscar-picking contest.

So what is a Bored to do? We make up our own Oscar Pool!

Unlike Chicago politics, you don't need to pay to play in the Oscar Pool. You just need to be a member of this Bored.

Pick the winner in each of the 20 Oscar categories (minus the short and documentary categories), answer the tiebreaker question at the bottom, and then post it all in this thread.

The winner gets a year's worth of bragging rights. But if you're the winner and you get a perfect score on all 20 Oscars, then you deserve a reward. I haven't decided what it will be yet. Might be a gift card or gift certificate to the restaurant or store of your choice.

In the case of a tie for most correct Oscar prognostications, whoever is closest to the actual number on the tiebreaker without going over will be the winner.

Only one entry per member. No Merry Men may participate in the contest, although they may comment on the categories at will. (Sorry, but allowing MM to compete would give an unfair advantage to those of us who have multiple MM accounts.)

The final entry deadline is Sunday February 22, 2009, at 6 PM Eastern. You may edit your entry as many times as you wish before the deadline, but once the deadline passes, editing will not be allowed. Any entries edited after the deadline will be disqualified.

Good luck to everybody!

Tiebreaker Question Giving your answer in hours and minutes, what will be the exact length of this year's Oscar ceremony? 3 hours 12 minutes

FWIW, I don't think "Slumdog" even deserved to be nominated -- nor, for that matter, did "Button" -- but it's officially a cultural phenomenon now, and I don't think it can be stopped. I don't think it'll be remembered in 2 years, either, but that's not unusual for Oscar winners.

The Best Supporting Actress race, I think, will be the one that's the toughest to guess. I went with Viola Davis simply because she has "THAT SCENE" that Oscar likes to reward, but I wouldn't be surprised by ANY of these women being announced the winner. I actually was very very tempted to choose Amy Adams, since I personally thought she did the best job of the bunch, and I know of a LOT of people pulling hard for Penelope Cruz, but I'm not a fan of hers or of about 80% of Woody Allen's work over the last 20 years. Woody does have a tendency to get Oscars for his supporting ladies, though.

If it was me doing the nominating and all the voting for this year's Oscars, the big awards would go to:

Best Picture - "In Bruges" (Barely beating out "WALL-E")
Best Director - Ron Howard, "Frost/Nixon" (barely beating out Martin MacDonagh for "In Bruges")
Best Actor - Colin Farrell, "In Bruges" (barely beating out Frank Langella in "Frost/Nixon"
Best Actress - Anne Hathaway, "Rachel Getting Married" (in a landslide)
Best Supporting Actor - TIE: Heath Ledger, "The Dark Knight" and Brendan Gleeson, "In Bruges"
Best Supporting Actress - Amy Adams, "Doubt"
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.
