Slumdog becomes millionaire despite giving wrong answer

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Mon Feb 16, 2009 8:08 am

The 'slumdog' was not entitled to be a 'millionaire'.

Call it his destiny or an oversight by the Oscar-front runner team protagonist Jamal is shown winning Rs 250,000 in the film despite giving a wrong answer. "Slumdog Millionaire" is based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup's novel "Q and A" and was adapted into the movie by scriptwriter Simon Beaufoy, who changed some parts of the story to make it fit in the film's narrative. The result of it is that Jamal ends up giving a wrong answer to a question with wrong options.

Swarup's book refers to" Ankhiya Hari Darshan Ki Pyasi" as the song by saint-poet Surdas. The question for the protagonist in the book is a different one.The song," Darshan Do Ghanshyam Nath Mori Ankhiya Pyasi", that features in the movie, is from 1957 film" Narsi Bhagat" which was directed by Devendra Goel. The film was based on the life of 15th Century Gujarati saint-poet Narsinh Mehta, who was a devotee of Lord Krishna.

The song, based on one of the oldest ragas-"Rag Kedar", was written by eminent Hindi poet and Bollywood song writer Gopal Singh Nepali.
Well, everyone knows that... I hate it when they get simple everyday facts like that wrong.

That was a very clever move by the producers. Once this bombshell error becomes known, it opens the door for the sequel, Millionaire 2: Back To The Slum.

Dude, if you check out the three-page thread devoted to the movie, you'll note that people still are putting plot points within spoilers. That's because a number of us (such as me, until this afternoon) who are interested in seeing the movie haven't yet had the opportunity.

So why in the name of all that's holy would you put a plot point in the thread TITLE? --Bob

Your point is certainly valid, but as a spoiler, it is not accurate, since...

...the top prize on the show was 20,000,000 rupees.

I was yelling at the screen, "Darshan Do Ghanshyam Nath Mori Ankhiya Pyasi! Darshan Do Ghanshyam Nath Mori Ankhiya Pyasi!" but it didn't help.
