I can't help picturing Barbara Eden when I try to think of Jeannie C. Riley, and I have to stop and think if she was in the Harper Valley movie, or if The Vagueness is conjuring up "I Dream of Jeannie C. Riley."

I've seen both movies, and IMHO they lightened up Ode to Billie Joe a bit too much by leaving out the last verse -- Dad's death, Mom's malaise, and so on. They basically ended the movie at Billie Joe's death, and the ending was less somber than I think it deserved. So yeah, it was a crummy movie compared to what it could have been.

Barbara Eden did indeed star in Harper Valley PTA, which (again IMHO) was great fun. I don't think they could have done any better with that one -- coming of age, single mom taking on the establishment, a revenge tour -- one of those movies I remember enjoying but don't need to see again.

Barbara Eden played Stella Johnson in both the movie and the tv series. Ode to Billy Joe starred the quintessentially teen angsty 70s duo of Glynnis O'Connor and Robby Benson. And, if that wasn't enough, it was directed by Jethro Beaudine!
