Too much

#1 Post by sunflower » Sun Feb 15, 2009 7:00 pm

I went to a local Lowe's today to purchase a ceiling fan, I had a coupon that expired today that I wanted to use. The store was slow and the cashier I approached was organizing paper shamrocks for a charity drive, and another was hanging them.

Before I continue with the story, let me say that I donate a significant amount of money to charities annually. Most notably, we do 2 large events at work - Relay for Life in the Spring (American Cancer Society), and around Christmas we "adopt" several families that live in CT public housing and donate whatever they need - toys, food, furniture, whatever. I also have a recurring monthly payment to the Humane Society on my credit card. I will also donate when friends do marathons, bike rides, etc. Okay, now that you know I'm not a cheap un-charitable person...

So the cashier asks me if I would like to donate. I can get a green shamrock for $1 or a gold for $5. I politely say "no thank you". She persists, telling me "you know you want to!" and I again say "no thank you". She rings up the one item and I hand over my coupon. She says "you won't even donate $1 and you want me to take this????" I stare at her, in disbelief, trying to remember if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything...and I take out my credit card and swipe it, indicating I am ready to complete the purchase and leave. She then hands me the receipt and says "you saved $9.64...see you could have bought 2 gold ones, I would have even kicked in the 26 cents!!"

I looked at her an tried to bite my tongue but politely said I'm sorry, but if I gave everyone who asked for it even $1, I'd be broke...I choose my charities annually and donate to them, and from time to time give a few dollars extra here or there...and then I told her if she hadn't pressured me, I might have donated but she completely turned me off to the whole thing. She then said, "well I'd tell you to have a nice day...but I wouldn't mean it."

I was amazed. I wanted to talk to her manager, but I was so pissed I needed to leave. I appreciate wanting to collect money, and maybe she has a reason to feel strongly for that charity, but I think you ask once, maybe twice, and let it go!!

I am sorry you had this bad experience.

I am also sorry you did not talk to the manager, as this was way off base.

And whether or not you donate to anything else is beside the point.

It is a shame you didn't have a comeback like, I just lost my job or house or something to make her feel bad about asking and thinking twice about asking the next person.

Read my post about nice people to help feel better.

This has nothing to do with the intention of your post, but it reminded me of another thread here not too long ago about the inability of store cashiers to calculate change or do any arithmetic without the cash register. She would have had to kick in 36 cents to come to $10.

Sorry, typo...I saved $9.74...didn't even notice it! She might have been a jerk, but her math was okay! :?

OK. Just one of my pet peeves. My total comes to $6.21, I give them $11.21 and their mouth falls open as they wonder why I gave them too much (the extra $1). Or total is $4.57, I give them $5.07 so I can get 2 quarters back, and they think I'm a mathematical genius.

Yes, that's my favorite, when they look blankly at you like you gave them a handful of cereal or something. I always want to say, sweetie, just type the numbers into the computer, it will figure it out for you!

After being a cashier for 5 years myself, I don't know how you can work with money and not pick up some of that stuff over time...but then again, I was good at math before I became a cashier. Just not so good at typing!

I would have asked the cashier if she got a commission or if there was some contest going on. After she answered, I would have thrown in some version of "how inappropriate you are being."

You should have talked to the manager. This was way over the line!

Whenever a business is running one of these promotions, I'm tempted to respond, "Would Lowes like to contribute $1 to [any charity of my choosing]?" Likely, the stores have a "no solicitation" policy that they can point to that would make that unacceptable. Fine, "no solicitation" should work both ways.

Maybe I'll call back and talk to the manager. I have my receipt, so they should be able to identify the cashier. I think the manager will care if that makes me choose Home Depot over Lowes, next time.

I'm pretty sure that a situation like that would be addressed were someone to complain about it at my Mecca, so it's worth a shot if her attitude bothered you that much. I know our cashiers are supposed to ask about, and even somewhat push, applications for the Mecca credit card (with small contests involved for who can get the most completed apps), but most cashiers couldn't care less about it. I've never been asked before even when I shop at another Mecca where they don't know I work for them until I whip out my dicsount card. But regardless, they are not supposed to be responsible and courteous when asking the customers about it, and that was way out of line. I'd have been digging to pay for the whole purchase in WG marked ones as revenge.....

The shamrock thing is done by my Church's every year too, though in my condition it might be a good idea if I don't swing by to see if they're doing it at this time. I usually buy one though, because for the dollar you give, you get a dollar off coupon for your combo the next time....

Don't try that at WDW! My order came to $2.55, so I gave the cashier $3.05. She tried to hand back the nickel and I shook my head no. So she typed $2.55 into the keypad, then stared blankly at the three ones, so I said, "two quarters." Her nametag had the name of some university I'd never heard of so I had no clue what country she came from or what language she spoke, so I held up a quarter I had and said, "two of these."

It will be a long summer for her....

An unrelated WDW cashiering anecdote, but did I mention when I was trying to buy breakfast at the food court, back in November, and the woman in front of me was paying for her family's breakfast with baggies full of change? After the poor cashier had counted up all those nickels and dimes and quarters and told her than it still didn't quite amount to the $40 or so of the bill, then the woman takes out a $100 bill to cover the rest!
