What, no Idol thread today?

#1 Post by KillerTomato » Thu Feb 12, 2009 9:02 am

Here's something to jumpstart the discussion:

Joanna Pacitti has been DQed based on her relationship with 19 Productions' staffers.

And I officially have removed Idol from my DVR and will not watch again until the two drama queen contestants (Tatiana, who has a fair voice but not only the worst laugh in the world but also the worst personality in the world after Nathaniel; and...um...Nathaniel) are gone. I was going to add Joanna to this list since she had no business being there in the first place -- not just because she had her shot and was soundly ignored by America after releasing an album, but for committing THE cardinal sin of forgetting her lyrics in EVERY Hollywood week performance and STILL getting chosen over more apparently deserving contestants.

I was also going to add Norman/Nick, but he's not worth mentioning and will be gone soon anyway.

I started a thread about Joanna, but not Idol in general.

Talk is that the whole Tatiana thing is just an act, like Nick/Normund. Here's hoping. I need both those fruitcakes to knock the crap off and start singing, stat. They need to put them in the same group of 12 together, and add in Nate the Drama Queen, to help neutralize the impact of VFTW. How to choose among that set?

I don't get why the black guy of the best friend pair got the boot. I really liked him.

I want to know how they divided them into 12s.

Jamar was better than his friend the widower, I thought. Maybe his demographic was overrepresented? Ju'not is very good also, but we taped the wrong channel last night, and I have not looked to see if he made it.

That that could be a reason - if the demographics is being black - is annoying to me. If the demographics is style of singer, then not so annoying.

I know they are casting a show and all that, so no one needs to remind me of that.

Spoiler
Ju'not (dumb spelling, but better than average singing) did indeed make it.

I quite agree that Jamar deserved to go on, especially before Pacitti, the Train Wreck and the Amazing Crying Drama Queen. But I like his buddy.

We do have to take into account that they look at a LOT more stuff than we see in the hour and a half or so per week, so maybe there was something we didn't see, but I thought he had a good voice and a nice personality (unlike, say, the Train Wreck who has an OK voice and awful personality, or the ACDQ, who has neither). I like the Dueling Pianos guy, and a couple of the girls (although I'm less than thrilled with Lil Rounds, who they're forcing down our throats already a la Archie last year) have potential. Blind Guy has potential too, but hasn't shown it fully yet, I think.

I'm curious as to how these next few weeks are going to pan out, frankly. My guess is that TW will be gone next week (since they only take the top guy, top girl, and second-highest vote getter of whichever sex, and I think that'll be Anoop, Widower, and Anne Marie (I think that's her name))....but I'm REALLY nervous they'll give TW the wild card spot. But that means a lot of interesting singers will be left in the cold right away.

I am caught now.

Jacob, the scathing reviewer on the Television Without Pity site, was screaming in glee when Jamar and Danny had a singoff. He had predicted it weeks ago.

Those reviews are more fun for me than the show.

Excerpts from last night, which I did not see but now feel like I did:

--Quick, make a list of the ways in which Tatiana differs substantively from Constantine. I'll wait.

--Jamar and Danny. I am so very, very tired of them. It's not fair to them, it's not fair to Jamar being the Ed McMahon here, but most of all: not fair to me, because this guy is going to be on this show for a long-ass time and I need to pace myself. Hatred is a marathon, not a sprint. Danny sang some ridic song in Hollywood, remember? And you remembered that children are our future and Dolly Parton and whatever? Remember? "Can I do better?" he asks himself. History does not record his answer to the question he just asked himself. The judges bask in the loveliness of him, and he acts squirrely some more. Thank God he's cute.

--[on Tatiana] Ryan's like, "Here comes that crazy bitch now," she throws herself on him like Scarlett O'Hara, then starts screeching and laughing maniacally while climbing his entire tiny body. It is a sign of Ryan's innate professionalism that he doesn't throw her across the room like a giant screaming spider. Nate looks on in enough outright disgust to win back a few points with me. We remember, at some point, a situation in Hollywood where she was standing with Kai and Cody and a girl with bangs and goes, "This is for all the guys who said I would have to sleep with them to get my album made. This is for all of you!" All three of them are like, "Everytime you blow our minds we think you're done, and then before we can even pull ourselves together, you top yourself. That's amazing." The few people that are left are like, "Maybe I should just go home now, dude. I do not want to be around that girl for a single second longer." I bet that's why they kept her for the end, so less people on the premises would know what they did.

She's had TWO recording contrcts, a role as Annie on Broadway at age 12, songs on 4 separate movie soundtracks, has a couple of buddies in the hierarchy of 19 Productions, the company behind "Idol", and the thing that frosted my ass the most, her boyfriend just recorded and released a song by new Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. Idol, last I checked, only mentioned in their statement that her "relationships" with some people at 19 Productions might have given some the "impression" of impropriety. NO MENTION that I saw of "we also thought it might look fishy that her boyfriend recorded a song by one of our judges".

They REALLY REALLY need to tread carefully, as they had enough controversy last year with things like Paula commenting on a song not yet sung. When you combine what has been discovered about Pacitti, Simon's statement at the beginning of Hollywood Week "Forget the lyrics, you're out", Pacitti then not managing to sing a single line correctly in the performance we saw last night, and then being passed into the Top 36 anyway, it's awfully hard not to think that the fix is in. There s more and more evidence that Idol has become AT LEAST the WWE, if not the Chicago Black Sox. At the very least, things are manipulated as much as possible for "Good tv"..otherwise there's no Tatiana, no Norman Gentle, no Drama Queen Nathan, etc. in the Top 36. We are seeing the Idol version of Celebrity Millionaire, folks. And I am seeing a Great White in the water and Idol preparing to jump it.....

I am actually starting to admire the Vote For the Worst crew in some weird way. They ultimately are proving to be good watchdogs for the hijinks that certainly seem suspicious at times.

I may be misremembering, but I don't believe Jamar and Danny were in a singoff. IIRC, Danny was a definite stay and Jamar a definite go. FTR, I like Danny (although I don't think he will even come close to winning).

As for the Train Wreck and Amazing Crying Drama Queen (I refuse to use their real names; they will be TW and ACDQ to me until they're gone, which will be shortly), the look he gave when she attacked Seacrest was funny as hell. As was TW's looking around for the camera to make sure it was on her before she started her caterwauling about moving on. I think her personality (or lack thereof) is a put-on, almost as much as The Guy Who Thinks It's All a Joke With His Shiny Shirt and Andy Kaufman-esque Alter Ego (also to remain nameless, although TGWTIAAJWHSSAAKAE is too long, so I'm gonna just refer to him as The Weirdo).

Still pouting since young sweet homeless girl didn't make the cut. And she sounded so good at the Kodak!

How does Wildcard work again? I'm hoping to see her come back somehow...

Don't think you'll see her. The Top 36 are split into three groups of 12 each. The Top female and male votegetters each night move on to the finals, along with the NEXT highest votegetter from each night, regardless of gender. The judges then select a group to participate in the wild card night. I don't believe anyone who did not make the top 36 will be invited, the group is selected from the remaining 27 semifinalists.

In Season 1, they said the wild cards could come from any earlier round. Don't know if that's true now, or if they've said.

I have been wondering if they are manipulative enough to send her home and then bring her back later in that round. I envisioned them telling her she was out, filming her and her mother crying, and then pulling her off to the side and saying, "Don't say anything nasty about the show because you might be invited back in a few weeks."

oh well. but thanks for the explanation. I'll hope for some freak incident to bring her back. Something having to do with the exit of T. would be excellent.

FOX understands about VFTW. That's why Nick and Tatiana and Nate are still around.

Nick is the only one of those three who can turn his character on and off. But I love a really good drag queen, so I have liked him all along. Not as a potential winner of the competition, of course. But he entertains me, and I am not offended by that.

I am rolling my eyes at Nate but he also can sing. Too bad he has all that baggage underfoot.

After Sanjaya, it is as if they are acknowledging it is not all about singing anyway.
