#1 Post by MinisterOfPropaganda » Tue Feb 10, 2009 6:42 am

As Minister of Propaganda, I'd like to welcome you to today's edition of Lyrically Speaking. Being as this is a Tuesday, we will be playing Tuesday Wordplay today. If you have a problem with that, you will be shot.

Today's game will be stickied by littlebeast13, via methods that are none of your business and shall remain closely guarded Bored secrets. If you have a problem with littlebeast13 editing my post, you will be shot. If you have a problem with littlebeast13 adding spoilers to anyone's answers to this game who forgets to do so, you will be shot. In the event we should run out of ammunition, we'll stick you in a room with Bob Juch for 10 years instead....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist. And if you choose not to play today's game, you will be shot....

1. They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.

2. I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If by chance you heard it for yourself
I never told a soul just how I've been feeling about you
But they said it really loud
They said it on the air

3. Sometimes she runs, sometimes she don't
More than once she's left me on the side of the road
The older she gets the slower we go

4. You had your time, you had the power
You've yet to have your finest hour

5. The VCR and the DVD
There wasn't none of that crap back in 1970
We didn't know about a World Wide Web
It was a whole different game being played back when I was a kid

6. Breaking news flash
Assassination
The whole country has been shot

7. Some of my friends sit around every evening
and they worry about the times ahead
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference
and the promise of an early bed

8. I dial it in and tune the station
They talk about the U.S. inflation
I understand just a little
No comprende, it's a riddle

9. Begin the day with a friendly voice
A companion unobtrusive
Plays that song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood

10. I wanna shake, I wanna dance
So count it off a'one two three
I feel the beat, I'm in a trance
No better place to be

11. Keep me out of country in the word
Deal the porch is leading us absurd.
Push that, push that, push that to the hull
That this isn't nothing at all.

12. When I feel that this old world
Is just to hard to bear
People comin' at me left and right
Day and night
Here's the thing I do

Okay, now I've got some cheesy C&W song from the 80s or so going through my head called
Spoiler
Nothing But the Radio On.
But I can't remember who did it and I can't seem to find it anywhere! I'm thinking it might have been a duet. Anyone else remember this?

I'm trying to hold out 2 hours so I can call my brother on his lunch hour and ask him.
Push it real good!

It took me until #7 to figure out the word! Vagueness rules!
Now that I know the word, it makes it easier to place some of the others....

1. They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.

I'll have to guess this would be Video Killed the Radio Star from the idea. The Buggles? Not Ruggles. I don't think....

2. I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If by chance you heard it for yourself
I never told a soul just how I've been feeling about you
But they said it really loud
They said it on the air

On the Radio, Donna Summer

3. Sometimes she runs, sometimes she don't
More than once she's left me on the side of the road
The older she gets the slower we go

Nope. Sounds countrified.

4. You had your time, you had the power
You've yet to have your finest hour

Very familiar! Not REM

5. The VCR and the DVD
There wasn't none of that crap back in 1970
We didn't know about a World Wide Web
It was a whole different game being played back when I was a kid

Nope

6. Breaking news flash
Assassination
The whole country has been shot

I think it's called Radio Clash? By (duh) The Clash, if so...

7. Some of my friends sit around every evening
and they worry about the times ahead
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference
and the promise of an early bed

Fer shure this is Radio Radio, Elvis Costello

8. I dial it in and tune the station
They talk about the U.S. inflation
I understand just a little
No comprende, it's a riddle

Mexican Radio, Wall of Voodoo. I wish I was in Tijuana eating barbecued iguana are some of the greatest song lyrics of all time....

9. Begin the day with a friendly voice
A companion unobtrusive
Plays that song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood

It's Rush. I think the title is The Spirit of Radio, or something like that. It echoes with the sounds of salesmen. (And I saw them in concert. Moving Pictures tour....)

10. I wanna shake, I wanna dance
So count it off a'one two three
I feel the beat, I'm in a trance
No better place to be

Nope

11. Keep me out of country in the word
Deal the porch is leading us absurd.
Push that, push that, push that to the hull
That this isn't nothing at all.

Radio Free Europe, REM. No comment necessary after all these years, I'm sure.... :P

12. When I feel that this old world
Is just to hard to bear
People comin' at me left and right
Day and night
Here's the thing I do

WAGging that Carpenters' song that starts out "When I was young I'd listen to the radio, waiting for my favorite song" and hoping the title is in there somewhere.....

REM also does Radio Song, but two by the same artist tends to make people's heads explode. Which isn't always a BAD thing...

1. They took the credit for your second symphony.
Rewritten by machine and new technology,
and now I understand the problems you can see.
Video Killed the Radio Star - The Buggles (And as everyone knows, the first video to be played on MTV when it hit the air August 1, 1981)

2. I was so surprised and shocked, and I wondered, too
If by chance you heard it for yourself
I never told a soul just how I've been feeling about you
But they said it really loud
They said it on the air
On the Radio - Donna Summer

3. Sometimes she runs, sometimes she don't
More than once she's left me on the side of the road
The older she gets the slower we go
There Ain't Nothing Wrong With the Radio - Aaron Tippin

4. You had your time, you had the power
You've yet to have your finest hour
Radio Gaga - Queen (This video was my first exposure to Queen period. And this video does something that just about every other Queen video does.... contains flashbacks from their previous videos. You'd almost think that would be paradoxal or something.....)

5. The VCR and the DVD
There wasn't none of that crap back in 1970
We didn't know about a World Wide Web
It was a whole different game being played back when I was a kid
AM Radio - Everclear (This gets played occasionally on my radio station, and even though I only heard it for the first time about 6 months ago, I love it!)

6. Breaking news flash
Assassination
The whole country has been shot
Radio Clash - The Clash

7. Some of my friends sit around every evening
and they worry about the times ahead
But everybody else is overwhelmed by indifference
and the promise of an early bed
Radio Radio - Elvis Costello

8. I dial it in and tune the station
They talk about the U.S. inflation
I understand just a little
No comprende, it's a riddle
Mexican Radio - Wall of Voodoo (I first heard this song in the mid 90's on the college radio station. Amazing how much stuff I missed from the 80's and had to catch the second time around....)

9. Begin the day with a friendly voice
A companion unobtrusive
Plays that song that's so elusive
And the magic music makes your morning mood
The Spirit of Radio - Rush (BTW Clem, do you know how often I get up in the morning? Not very often.... and no, I don't have an evening song when I do wake up either....)

10. I wanna shake, I wanna dance
So count it off a'one two three
I feel the beat, I'm in a trance
No better place to be
Turn Up the Radio - Autograph (My mom won this album (Sign in Please) off the radio in 1985! She still has it along with the Eurythmics "Touch" and Dan Fogelberg's "Language of Love" as relics from her radio contest days of the 80's.....)

11. Keep me out of country in the word
Deal the porch is leading us absurd.
Push that, push that, push that to the hull
That this isn't nothing at all.
Radio Free Eurpoe - REM (One of many, many REM songs I can't stand [ :P to mini] even if Michael Stipe did go to high school in the next town over [Yeah, and you thought he grew up in Georgia!])

12. When I feel that this old world
Is just to hard to bear
People comin' at me left and right
Day and night
Here's the thing I do
Turn the Radio Up - Barry Manilow (Funny thing. When I looked at this list last night to get the lyrics for these songs, I freaked out at first thinking I had mistakenly put down this for Eric Carmen's "Make Me Lose Control", and that I'd have to find me another Radio song. I forgot all about this dreck, another Mecca Radio special that got played almost every night in the early 2000's. Muzak deserved to go down and go down HARD....)

JJC Points:

Most of the JJC point awards for this game were huge, as there were some big laughs in this one!

melly got 3 JJC points for the Rush answer on Mexican Radio...

Marley got a JJC point he probably didn't really want....

TLITF got a JJC point for invoking Clint...

Saucy musta been looking to release some stress from the censorship threads and blew the lid off her answers! 5 JJC points, which is like 8 Canadian, eh?

I really, really, really wanted to give elwood 10 points for his answers today, because it was extremely clever and hilarious! But I have set the supermax bar at 5 and am not going to go over it.... really, I'll keep that promise liek I kept my 3 point max promise. So he will have to settle for 5...

TBone, always up to the humor point challenge, got 3 JJC points. It never hurts to invoke Alicia Bridges....

ghost gets a JJC point because I can give her one....

Clem was a bit off his game today, and with the heavy competition from others in this game will have to settle for only 3 JJC points this time...

Estonut gets 3 points for Dick Trickle, the one and only reason I watched every Winston Cup and Busch Series race between 1995 and 1997.....
