He was awesome.
RadioDude said he was nominated for an Oscar for a movie I'd never heard of -- Give 'em Hell, Harry!
He was also nominated for supporting actor in Battleground and won the Golden Globe for that performance.
He didn't lose a step.

It was a filmed version of his stage performance as Harry Truman (he also did a great one man show of Will Rogers too).SportsFan68 wrote:He was awesome.

Still, most people of my generation (who attended Saturday afternoon horror matinees) remember him for winding up as ant food in Them!
I guess the effects of Miracle Gro wear off after a while....

An Oscar? Wow, for some reason I've always thought that was a made for TV movie. Anyway, I haven't seen it for years, but if you like Whitmore (and you like Shawshank, so you do) you should hunt it down. When I was a kid, I thought James Whitmore WAS Harry Truman!SportsFan68 wrote:He was awesome.

I love his work--especially his Will Rogers.

LOL -- reminds me of when I was a kid, and we watched PT 109 every time it was on. I thought Cliff Robertson was the real JFK (as in, he took time out from being Prez to play himself in a movieWhen I was a kid, I thought James Whitmore WAS Harry Truman!
ETA: Oops, forgot to say RIP, Mr. Whitmore
