I remember Leon Lett, not just from the Super Bowl, but from an even more boneheaded play either earlier that year or the previous year.

Dallas was playing Miami. I cared because it was a rare year when the Jets were in contention so I badly wanted Miami to lose. It appeared that I was going to get my wish when, with seconds left in the game, Miami, which was trailing by 1 or 2 points, attempted a field goal that was partially blocked behind the line.

The ball traveled about 15-20 yards down the field. All Dallas had to do was let the ball die and they could have run out the clock. But that's not what happened. Leon Lett (who had not yet garnered infamy in the Super Bowl) hung out in the ball's vicinity. It touched him, and then Miami recovered. Given a second chance, the field goal unit succeeded and Miami won the game. --Bob

I remember that. I think it was after the Super Bowl screwup, though - I don't think I would have remembered the Miami incident if I didn't already know his name from the SB.

I've checked. You're right. I would have sworn on a stack of Bibles that it was the other way around, and I would have been wrong. --Bob

It's always a good thing when the Cowboys lose, and back then it didn't happen too often.

Yep, it was on Thanksgiving 1993.... after an early season ice storm swept through the plains. You don't see many games in Dallas where there's snow and ice to contend with....

Ha, this is funny how the subject changed in this thread!

However.....my point was that for all Leon-the-Prosecutor, not Leon-the-Defensive-Tackle, can tell from a picture is that Phelps may have been smoking "something."

Perhaps Phelps was at the hookah bar (perfectly legal!*) and was doin' it wrong!

*I don't see tobacco on the WADA list. And, now that I've actually read the list, cannabinoids are only prohibited during competition periods!

Alcohol is banned (during competition periods only) for motor sports (aeronautics, auto racing, motorcycling, powerboating), archery and shooting sports, Karate, and, oddly enough, bowling! (How do they have beer frames? )
