Groundhog Day was the half way point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox, after all! :)

Yes, my semi-pagan friend researched it -- it was once an important pagan festival day call Imbolc, one of the cross-quarter days, whatever that means.

I call her semi-pagan because she talks a good paganship, but when it comes time to dancing naked in the moonlight on the winter solstice, or summer solstice for that matter, she won't do it.

But the sunsets have been getting later for 2 months now, not just since the winter solstice....

True, the earliest sunset is usually around Dec. 7 -- but the days continue to get shorter because the sun rises a bit later every day until early January. The December solstice occurs when the sun reaches its southernmost point in the sky (from our perspective, looking from Earth!) If you want to see how the sun's position in the sky changes throughout the year, check out some analemma pictures.

I start to notice it staying lighter longer around this time of year -- I usually swim from 5:45 till 6:30 PM, & it's still daylight out when I'm in the pool these days. A few weeks ago it was dark the whole time. When the indoor swim program starts, in mid-September, it's still light when I get OUT, and I'm walking into a lot of sun glare because I generally park at the western end of the building and am walking toward the setting sun.

Follow-through is a bitch sometimes.

Yep. She gives this lame excuse about how cold it is on the winter solstice. Which it is, there's no denying it.

She can't come up with anything for the summer solstice. We will call her on it again this year.
