The sheriff wants to arrest Phelps?

You gotta be kidding me - from a photo?

really?

Doesn't he have more winnable things to pursue than this?

Maybe he used to work with the D.A. in Raleigh, home of Duke University fraternities.

Sheriff Lott is a publicity hound, my bet would be that Lott isn't going to follow through.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Uh, actually, Duke is in Durham. :P

Is this a joke?

Raleigh - NC State
Chapel Hill - UNC
Durham - Duke
Winston-Salem - Wake Forest

This is as bad as when someone once asked me if Purdue was also in Bloomington. That's justifiable homicide anywhere north of U.S. 40.

I checked to make sure the prosecutor in the Duke case wasn't located in Chapel Hill since it is very close to Durham but, nope, different counties. Most of the town of Chapel Hill is in Orange County while Nifong was the prosecutor for Durham County and the city of Durham is the county seat.

If UNC is in Chapel Hill, then where are UNC-Charlotte, UNC-Asheville, UNC-Wilmington, and UNC-Greensboro located (other than on the December schedules of most ACC schools)?

Well, Purdue DOES have other campuses besides West Lafayette. Or people I've interviewed recently have been lying on their resumes.

Yes, it was a tough loss. Our own fault, though. We should have won it in regulation.

Purdue is just not as good without Hummell. I'm hoping that they are resting him to finally straighten out his back and not because it got worse.

True but we'll never have one in Bloomington. There aren't any anywhere south of Indianapolis.

I'm not sure I understand the question. The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is located in Chapel Hill. I apologize for not including the "at Chapel Hill" bit to "UNC" but Chapel Hill had already been supplied by Bob Juch in the post I was replying to.

"Chapel Hill - UNC at Chapel Hill" seems a bit redundant in this circumstance.

None of the other UNC campuses that you listed are in Chapel Hill. NC State also is part of the University of North Carolina system. That one didn't seem to throw you. I wasn't trying for a comprehensive list of all universities and their locations in NC.

How could he possibly prosecute this? Is there anything in that photo that would indicate a location that was in his jurisdiction?

I remember Leon Lett, not just from the Super Bowl, but from an even more boneheaded play either earlier that year or the previous year.

Dallas was playing Miami. I cared because it was a rare year when the Jets were in contention so I badly wanted Miami to lose. It appeared that I was going to get my wish when, with seconds left in the game, Miami, which was trailing by 1 or 2 points, attempted a field goal that was partially blocked behind the line.

The ball traveled about 15-20 yards down the field. All Dallas had to do was let the ball die and they could have run out the clock. But that's not what happened. Leon Lett (who had not yet garnered infamy in the Super Bowl) hung out in the ball's vicinity. It touched him, and then Miami recovered. Given a second chance, the field goal unit succeeded and Miami won the game. --Bob

I remember that. I think it was after the Super Bowl screwup, though - I don't think I would have remembered the Miami incident if I didn't already know his name from the SB.

I've checked. You're right. I would have sworn on a stack of Bibles that it was the other way around, and I would have been wrong. --Bob
