Don't know if it will help, but 'silver' in Greek is argyros.
Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

David Silverman was one of the animators of The Simpsons, so that takes care of one of our alternates (both Davids are needed for their first names) and one of the TV people SSS mentioned.

Murray Silver wrote the book "Great Balls of Fire: The Uncensored Story of Jerry Lee Lewis". So...

90) Murray Kempton + 51) Jerry Lee Lewis = Murray Silver

Earl Silbert was involved in Watergate. So...

83) Earl Nightingale + 35) Elliot Richardson = Earl Silbert

Going on a hunch, I stumbled into the correct answer of the last unanswered question.

50) In one version of her life story, she had forty dragons for companions.
This refers to the Albanian version of the story of SNOW WHITE.

As it turns out, Snow White is the main character in a long-running San Francisco musical revue called "Beach Blanket Babylon" that was created by another person named Steve Silver.

2) Steve DeOssie + 47) Francis Scott Key = Steve Silver
26) Steve Irwin + 50) Snow White = Steve Silver

I just looked Earl Silbert up, and he goes better with John Sirica, since he was the prosecutor at the trial. That means Pope John XXIII goes with William Weld. And that's the last of the wrong pairings, I believe.

Ben Silverman is an NBC programming director, so Ben Nelson must go with Will Arnett via 30 Rock. And that's the last of the current US network television people.

Googling like crazy now. There's a BBC correspondent named Kate Silverton who apparently did a noteworthy interview with Helen Mirren. That takes care of Kate Millet and SSS's tv name from abroad. Consolidation below has been updated accordingly.

And Thomas Silverstein of the Aryan Brotherhood is in the same prison as the Unabomber, so that takes care of our other 'infamous' person.

6) Thomas Hobbes + 45) Ted Kaczynski = Thomas Silverstein
[It tickles me to have Hobbes linked with this pair. They are certainly nasty and brutish enough.]

The only SSS comment still relevant is this one: "The fictional literary character is rather well known, and if you look at the list of clues carefully, you should be able to figure it out."
franktangredi wrote:Googling like crazy now. There's a BBC correspondent named Kate Silverton who apparently did a noteworthy interview with Helen Mirren. That takes care of Kate Millet and SSS's tv name from abroad. Consolidation below has been updated accordingly.

And here's the fictional character: Susan Silverman is the girlfriend of Spenser, the detective created by Robert B. Parker. That also clears up our last alternative matches.

Silverstein, who has killed one guard and several inmates since being incarcerated, is generally considered the most dangerous prisoner in the federal prison system and has been in solitary longer than anyone else (25 years).

None of us knew half that stuff. Collectively, we knew a more than half of it. And it was smilergrogan who figured out the 'Tangredi,' or gimmick.

I could not get my mind off Elliot Silverstein throughout the duration of this puzzle... and now the connection has finally hit me.

Elliot Silverstein directed "Cat Ballou", which starred Ted Turner's ex-wife Jane Fonda.

So that leaves us with Bruno and Apollo.

I could have sworn SSS had ruled out Elliot Silverstein back when he said "Of your partials, two are people in this puzzle; one is not." But I went back and looked, and I realize that he was referring to Sheldon Silver, not Elliot Silverstein. I have no idea why I made that error.

(And I wonder why SSS didn't use Jane Fonda directly.)

A funny thing happens when you google 'Bruno Sammartino" and "Apollo" together. You get this tag team:
Bruno Sammartino & Argentina Apollo def Waldo Von Erich & Smasher Sloan

So that completes the puzzle!

Elliot Silverstein was an executive in the Director's Guild in the 1980s when Turner was on his colorization kick. Silverstein was active in the Guild's efforts to prevent Turner from colorizing black & white classic films of the era.

Although after I posted the puzzle, I realized that I probably should have used either Fonda or Lee Marvin as a clue instead of Turner.

It's tough to gauge how difficult to make these puzzles. I've had a couple of what I thought were tough puzzles that were completely solved in two days on the old Bored. I wanted to come up with 47 matchups (47 being the atomic number of silver), with a few that would be tricky. Actually, the last two that were solved, Silverstein and Argentina Apollo, were among the ones that I thought of off the top of my head before doing any in depth research (as was the "other" Steve Silver).

So congrats to everyone on this one.
