Working Up a Good Hate ;-P

#1 Post by VAdame » Thu Jan 29, 2009 11:19 pm

Hating Baltimore, Cleveland or Dallas comes naturally.

But Pittsburgh Steelers fans might need to dig a little deeper to discover their inner dislike for Super Bowl XLIII foe Arizona.

As the runup to the big game picks up steam, we’re here to help, with these seven reasons to hate Arizona and its Cardinals.

1. No trees.

Where would a real cardinal live in Arizona? On a cactus? C’mon, this team name is as misplaced as the Utah Jazz. The franchise should have picked a new name — say, the Arizona Tumbleweeds — instead of clinging desperately to its lineage as the St. Louis Cardinals, and before that the Chicago Cardinals and Racine Cardinals.

2. No daylight-saving time.Arizonans doesn’t recognize daylight-saving time. Due to smugness or laziness, they refuse to “spring forward” or “fall back” like the rest of us, missing out on the twice-a-year joy of resetting every clock radio, car radio, microwave clock and wall clock they own.

3. Seasons don’t change.

Western Pennsylvanians savor the beauty of spring, the crisp air of fall, the hopes of a white Christmas, and that sunny, warm stretch of summer that lasts here about three weeks. What does Arizona have: Yearlong scorching heat. But it’s a dry heat, eh?

4. Worst. Episode. Ever.

That episode of “The Brady Bunch” when the family visits the Grand Canyon in Arizona. At least the Hawaii episode had surfing and a big nasty spider.

5. Last in firsts.

Western Pennsylvania inventors gave the world banana splits, Big Macs, bingo, radio, a polio vaccine, PBS television, Internet emoticons, the Ferris wheel, and sandwiches slathered in slaw and fries.

Arizona’s contribution to the world: the first bolo tie.

6. Cooties.

Arizona’s backup quarterback, Matt Leinart, dated Paris Hilton.

7. Bimbos.

Meet the Arizona Cardinal cheerleaders: Alix, Brittani, Brittany, Angie B., Angie C., Dana B., Dana S., Jennalee, Megan F., Megan J., Latoya, Neeley, Shandie, Tamar, Whitney C. and Whitney W., and a few others who dot their “I’s” with smiley faces. Do we really need all that exposed, taut flesh jiggling and gyrating on the sidelines? This is a football game, not a gentlemen’s club.

Yinz don’t see any Steelers cheerleaders, do yinz? :P

Wikipedia's map of the cardinal's range shows that this is a misconception.

What? No cardinals in California? I don't think we have any Angels either.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

Gila Monsters would be a great team name (of course then they might choose silver and black as their colors, which we simply cannot have).

Arizona also the last state to recognize MLK day.

I don't hate them.

I think they are a good team, with a pretty good story.

They are just gonna lose.

Football Baby Boy will hit and tackle many of them.

He does not hate them either.

I'm not attempting to derail your attempt to work up a good hate but I just wanted to point out that the Racine Cardinals was one of the early names of the team but it is not based on being located in Racine, WI. It comes from Racine Avenue in Chicago. The club was originally Morgan Athletic Club and then Racine Normals before getting old uniforms from the University of Chicago and changing the name to Racine Cardinals.

When the NFL was formed in 1920, they changed to become the Chicago Cardinals because it was thought that the Racine Legion from Wisconsin was going to join the league. They did but not until 1922.

I tape and watch The Biggest Loser (I know). They had Kurt on for a challenge this week. It was taped way before the play-offs. His 'speech' about anything being possible was from the heart. I wish I wanted to root for his team to win. I don't.

Silver and black?

The Gila Monsters should be black and pink.

Funny, but I can't quite bring myself to hate them either :P

'Specially since I root for the St. Louis Cardinals (baseball!) unless they're actually playing the Pirates. My Mom is a native St. Louisan and I spent a lot of time there as a kid, so I guess I come by it honestly  I always buy Mom cardinal-themed stuff for Christmas & her birthday -- placemats, wind-chimes, figurines, etc....

Jay Leno ran some "scientific tests" last night and concluded that the Men of Steel will beat the Redbirds 13-zip. The only one I really paid attention to was the Pigskin test. They set a little piggie (think Arnold from Green Acres!) in the middle of a mock football field, and had professional hog callers call from each end zone. The "pigskin" ran right to the Steelers side!

Didn't the Cardinals and Steelers merge into one team for a time in the primoridal days of the NFL?

Perhaps an expert hereabouts could enlighten us.
I am about 25% sure of this.

I know the Steelers and Eagles merged during WWII. The Steagles weren't very good.

Yes, they did.

Card-Pitt was the merged team in 1944. The team was 0-10.

The "Steagles" merger was in 1943. That team went 5-4-1 which was the first winning season in the history of the Eagles and the second winning team for the Steelers.

Uh, yes. Duh.

I think both teams are mentioned in some of my Dad's WWII letters. I'll have to go through them and find the references. I do know he and my Grandpa discussed the Latrobe High School team a fair amount in their letters, as well as baseball.

To add to the story, the team was informally known as the "Car-Pitts", as every team walked over them.

I said a cheerleader for The Pittsburgh Steelers, even though they don't have any now.
