"We had a breakthrough"

#1 Post by peacock2121 » Wed Jan 28, 2009 6:12 am

It's a quote from my dad.

I speak to him every night - actually I call them every night and sometimes I speak to my mom, sometimes my dad and sometimes both.

Anywho - the breakthrough.

I told you guys about the bridge at the clubhouse. She plays Monday mornings. I think she has to be there at 8:30. My dad has started golfing on Monday mornings, as she is gone as long as it takes for him to play 18 holes. He tees off at 7:00, so if she is not awake when he leaves, he calls her to make sure she is up, knows she has to go the the clubhouse and that she goes.

This Monday, he was through the front nine and realized he forgot to call her. He was devastated. Her partner would be partnerless and it would be his fault. Her partner would quit on her because she is not reliable. He played horribly on the back nine.

He came home with his tail between his legs. My mom was not there.

She woke up, laid there for a minute then realized it was Monday and that she had to be down at the clubhouse. She got up, washed up, got dressed and got there just as her partner arrived.

My dad kept saying - she had to remember 2 things and she did!

We had a breakthrough!

so sweet.

Great news Pea.

Sounds like Operation Bridge is acheiving its goal.

Very good idea and execution.

OK, now the important part -- how's the bridge going?

This is very nice. Do you think that the mental processes required by her bridge playing are connecting synapses or she has something that she looks forward to so much and is really important to her?

I keep checking the scores and it looks like she and her partner are usually next to last in points. When I ask her, she says she doesn't pay attention to scores, she just plays. I am not sure if that is true or if she says that because she has no memory of how she did.

This is Monday's scoring:

9 64.95 140.30 A 1 0.88(A) Roger Casey - Nancy Scott
6 59.74 129.04 C 2 1 1 0.62(A) Kathy Splane - Annette Grimpe
5 54.31 117.30 C 3 2 2 0.44(A) Jeanette McTaggart - Malcolm (Mike) McTaggart
7 54.27 117.23 B 4 3 0.31(A) Jack Mulford - J.Martin O'neill
8 53.00 114.49 C Don Burlingame - Peggy Burlingame
10 50.29 108.62 A Shirley Passeri - Mary Ellen Nevin
2 49.50 106.92 B Carol O'connor - Retta Gardiner
11 48.61 105.00 A Mary Jane Haley - Bill Johnson
3 46.69 100.85 B Anita Perrier - Jaye Roy

I know she loves playing bridge.

She knows that Tuesday nights are the 'in home' bridge club she has done for years. She even knows when it is at her house.

Last night, she didn't even know that I know she goes to play bridge at the clubhouse.

I suggested that my dad cross off days on the calendar, so she can look at it and know what day it is. They use the calendar for all of the 'things to do", each one on the correct day. She looked at it one night to tell me what they did that day. When I asked what she had planned for the next day - she told me "Let me look...."

My dad feels so proud when some structure he put in place does it's job.

It's a HUGE thing to feel you have some control. Huge. Really. Gigantic, actually. I'm so happy for both of them, and by extension, you.

This is wonderful!

I wish something like this would work for my mom. Alas, she always knows what day it is. (Whatever day it is, it's her least favorite day of the week.)

Thanks! I think they're doing great.

We came in third last night with a 52-something. It was quite a night. We got a high board by bidding two and going down one. Ugh! Everybody else bid more and went down more. That's sorta how it went all night.

I don't know the story behind this, but it sounds like this is progress, so good.

I was sitting here being impressed that she could play bridge- I considered THAT to be the breakthrough.

LOL - We are all scratching our heads as well. (she has been playing longer than I have been alive, so that she could play is something we all take for granted). My mom can't remember what she made for dinner (and on some days that she made dinner and ate it) but she can remember what cards were played in a hand of bridge.

The brain is a mind boggling thing.

Of course, I think music is a more innate skill, but still...
