screen video captures

This may be similar to etaoin's question, but is there a way, using built-in applications in Windows XP, to do a video capture? I'm interested in trying to capture the J! online test tomorrow night so that I can check my answers at leisure. I'd like to be able to activate an application that would record the screen and be able to play it back.

Nope, nothing built-in. There are many programs you can buy that are designed to capture screens, mouse movements and keyboards input to create training sessions, but they're rather expensive for your purpose.

If the only reason you want it is so that you can remember all the questions to figure out your score, you should have time to jot down a brief note giving the gist of the question if you don't hit enter right after you answer and just let the next question appear when the time is up.

If you think that you need to pay more attention to the question or need the entire time to get the answer, there are two other ways I can think of that would accomplish the same thing.

1. Have somebody else there to write down the questions for you.

2. Use a voice recorder and say the question out loud when you're reading it.

I think what people on the J! board do to transcribe the test is set up their videocamera to tape their monitor while they play.

That would be nice IF I had a video camera.

My 11 year old took the Kid's test a couple of weeks ago. I tried to transcribe the questions while he took it, but it was way difficult! The 20 seconds allowed per question went by so quickly!

After it was over my nephew suggested I should have taken a digital picture of each question instead. Which may have worked!

Tape-recording works great. I set up my microcassette recorder next to the computer, then read the questions out loud as they appeared. I think having the aural input helped me process some of them as well.

I was then able to transcribe all the questions and answers - and have a funny tape of myself puzzling through some of the more obscure clues.

http://camstudio.org/ supposedly has a free screen-recording program. The people on the desktop tower defence forums seem to love it.
