NHL Hockey All-Star Fans?

#1 Post by Estonut » Sat Jan 24, 2009 9:22 pm

My middle nephew is a hockey nut who didn't want to go on a family outing to the mountains this weekend because he didn't want to miss the SuperSkills contest today nor the actual All-Star game tomorrow.

I wanted to surprise him with a recording of each, so I plugged in my cable box (which I don't use unless I need a channel number in the hundreds) about 12 hours before the event. I was even going to add the package which includes NHLNET until I realized that NHLNET was only airing the peripheral practices, red carpets & post-events. The events I wanted most were on VERSUS, which I found out I already had. Usually when I plug in the box after a period of inactivity, I find that it has lost its authorization and I need to call Time-Warner to have it re-authorized. 12 hours before the event, all was working fine without the need for authorization. With 20 minutes to go before the end of the event, I lost all digital channels due to the authorization issue. T-W couldn't tell my why it took 12 hours for that to happen.

I think the part that I missed was probably the most exciting part (hence the reason for showing it last). They are not re-airing this event, but, of course, the game tomorrow gets repeated once.

Does anyone who happened to record this event have the capability to burn a copy for me? I know it's a long shot, but I'm still hoping.

TIA

Sorry. I'm planning to watch the All-Star game but I didn't record (or even watch) the skills competition.
No matter where you go, there you are.

http://nhl.com

SHOULD offer much or all of the skills competition at zero or low price as a bargain download for publicity , whether they will I am not sure.

I will check if Réseau des Sports is repeating everything. If so, I will see if the old VHS my only recording device can splice in. I doubt it, since I lost the clicker a decade or so ago. It would be neat to get a French lesson as well :D :D

(RDS tends to do repeats, and CBC and TSN in English tend not).

Thanks, Doc!

I just quickly checked NHL.COM and couldn't find a downloads page. I will check more thoroughly later. I'd prefer a format that we can watch on TV, but I'll take what I can get at this point.

With respect to the VHS: If they DO repeat the show up there at a workable time, would it be possible to record the last portion of the show by just setting the channel and pushing a "record" button? All of my VCRs have that capability. I missed the last 20 minutes of a 150 minute show here. I would be most appreciative, if that were possible for you. My nephew would be so mesmerized by the slap shots that he mightn't realize it's au Francaise.

my VHS problem is that daughter took it off line to go to watch a tape of a Grand Prix race with boyfriend, and when it came back, it required a command which only the clicker can give, and the clicker disappeared about eight years ago I think. Some people think a full examination of the heating ducts would find it. . A universal clicker was purchased for another room of the house at Christmas and IF THAT HAS NOT DISAPPEARED it can be programmed.

Zdeno Chara clocked at 105 MPH not kilo/hr for his slapshot. Great going Ottawa for not just opening the Bank of Canada vault for him.

I will check the program schedule now, and report back.

I think I have an answer.

The whole skills competitions are currently watchable, en Français, at

http://rds.ca

I am still not certain whether RDS is showing the NHL stuff again or events of this afternoon in the afternoon timeframe, although I think it is the repeat.

Please check if what you are missing is up on the RDS website. If you have a screen grabber, it would be saveable. And again, good language lesson.

It's been a long time since I took French. I assume the Skills competitions are broken down under the following links?

Compétitions intégrales
Le patineur le plus rapide
Épreuve échappées
Les tirs de précision
Le tir le plus puissant
Les tirs de barrage | 2e partie

I'm not familiar with a screen grabber. It looks as if many are available as free downloads. Is there any particular one I should look for? I'm still running XP on my PC and use IE for browsing.

Thanks for all of your help on this, etaoin22!

I am not a techie enough to know how to grab screens, so I can't give advice, except to know it is supposedly, as Dylan said, very easily done. Maybe I will open another thread on this.

The Complete Skills Competition:

Fastest Skater
Breakaway Challenge
Accurate Shot
Hardest Shot
Elimination Shooting AKA Shoot-out
