Kay Yow has died

#1 Post by Ritterskoop » Sat Jan 24, 2009 1:53 pm

N.C. State women's basketball coach since 1975.

I am pissed.

I read a nice article about her today. She fought a good fight. I'm glad the team got to see her. May she rest in peace.

Pissed at the fact that cancer would take her.

Much like my feelings when my young, vibrant sister-in-law was taken by the same thing.

Pissed barely describes it..

I heard this and got really sad--we need more people like her in sports and in life--not fewer.

I am trying not to see it as a battle that she lost. I am editing out references to such, when they work. I do not want to remember her as someone who lost a battle.

I am not mad anymore. That was my first reaction, and I have no specific place to point it. I know everyone dies, and I do not want anyone to be in lots of pain. I just wish some people could go on forever, when they are making the world better.

I would like to do as well as she did for 33 years in one place, and be remembered for that competence.

Try to think of the countless lives she touched, including your own. She likely inspired many, many people to try to be like her.

I've been thinking about this since Skoop posted it. I've decided that I have no objection to the word "battle" in these circumstances, because fighting cancer too often becomes a war. Under those circumstances, I don't see a negative reflection on anyone who does not ultimately win against an enemy that fights dirty. It's not the winning that makes a hero, but the resistance against evil opposition.

I am sorry that Coach Yow won't be around to inspire and encourage others for many more years. I trust that the people who knew and admired her most will take on part of that role.

I have faith that the rest of us will try to inspire and encourage others in whatever circumstances we find ourselves.

I am sorry she is no longer on this earth to do what she did for many years.

Skoop, I love that you are pissed and that you are expressing being pissed. I say, stay pissed until you are no longer pissed. You will move to another emotion, then be that until you are done with that one.

May she rest in peace.

I left in expressions about fighting a battle.

I deleted those saying she had lost, on the stories I handled, which was not that many of them.

Thanks for your illumination.

I just ran across this quote from Kay Yow:

"Don't drown in self-pity. Swish your feet a little, then get out."

On the basis of those words alone, I would have liked her very much.
