Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/23/09

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Jan 23, 2009 1:21 am

For today's Free For All Friday, we have the first of a three part series in which a song will be posted for every year from 1958 to 2008. Today's installment features 17 songs beginning with the year 1960 and skipping every third year to 2008....

This game closes on Monday morning.....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist....

1. (1960) There's some things that I want you to know now
Just as sure as the wind's gonna blow now
The men'll come and the men are gonna go now
Before you tell 'em that you love 'em so now

2. (1963) I'm gonna drink a lotta coffee, spend a little cash
Make that girl love me when I put on some trash
You can understand why I've got to get back

3. (1966) That's the way the whole thing started
Silly but it's true
Thinkin' of a sweet romance
Beginning in a queue

4. (1969) Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

5. (1972) But I ain't forgetting that you were once mine,
but I blew it without even tryin'.
Now I'm eatin' my heart out,
tryin' to get a letter through

6. (1975) Write your problems down in detail
Take them to a higher place
You've had your cry - no, I should say wail
In the meantime hush your face

7. (1978) I held her close until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine

8. (1981) Life isn't easy from the singular side
Down in the hole some emotions are hard to hide
It's your decision - it's the chance that you take
It's on your head - it's a habit that's hard to break

9. (1984) Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me

10. (1987) Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only the shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

11. (1990) She likes it neat
And he makes a mess
I take it easy
Baby I get obsessed

12. (1993) Passion or coincidence once prompted me to say-
Pride will tear us both apart.
Well now pride's gone out the window, cross the rooftops, runaway.
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

13. (1996) Oh, I really should have known
By the time you drove me home
By the vagueness in your eyes, your casual good-byes

14. (1999) We'll fight, not out of spite
for someone must stand up for what's right
cause where there's a man who has no voice
there ours shall go singing

15. (2002) You waited this long to stop debating
Cuz I'm back, I'm on the rag and ovulating
I know you got a job Ms. Cheney
But your husband's heart problem is complicating

16. (2005) Is ya man on the floor?
If he ain't...
Let me know

17. (2008) I don't know what this is
But you've got me twitchin'
Like you knew you would
I don't know what you do
But you do it well
I'm under your spell

Argh! I guess I'll answer now before I forget...
I know I can get more with time..

1. (1960) There's some things that I want you to know now
Just as sure as the wind's gonna blow now
The men'll come and the men are gonna go now
Before you tell 'em that you love 'em so now

Shop Around, Neil Sedaka did a version, but not in this year. Does that count? I'll say something like the Marvelettes. Some Girl Group

2. (1963) I'm gonna drink a lotta coffee, spend a little cash
Make that girl love me when I put on some trash
You can understand why I've got to get back

Sugar Shack, no clue on the name

3. (1966) That's the way the whole thing started
Silly but it's true
Thinkin' of a sweet romance
Beginning in a queue

Bus Stop, the Hollies

4. (1969) Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

In the Ghetto, Elvis Presley

5. (1972) But I ain't forgetting that you were once mine,
but I blew it without even tryin'.
Now I'm eatin' my heart out,
tryin' to get a letter through

This is bugging me. It's Rod Stewart.

6. (1975) Write your problems down in detail
Take them to a higher place
You've had your cry - no, I should say wail
In the meantime hush your face

Right, You're Bloody Well Right, or something like that. Supertramp

7. (1978) I held her close until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine

Okay, the fact that I didn't even have to think for two seconds on who sang this scares me. Thunder Island, Jay Ferguson. Why is this at the front of my brain today?

8. (1981) Life isn't easy from the singular side
Down in the hole some emotions are hard to hide
It's your decision - it's the chance that you take
It's on your head - it's a habit that's hard to break

In the Dark, Billy Squier (I saw him in concert, and paid for the tickets. I love Billy Squier so there.)

9. (1984) Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me

For the Longest Time, Billy Joel who I already told you I saw in concert. :P

10. (1987) Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only the shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief

Don't Dream it's Over, Crowded House, and yes, I saw THEM in concert, too! :P

11. (1990) She likes it neat
And he makes a mess
I take it easy
Baby I get obsessed

Now, THIS time it's Paula Abdul's Opposites Attract!

12. (1993) Passion or coincidence once prompted me to say-
Pride will tear us both apart.
Well now pride's gone out the window, cross the rooftops, runaway.
Left me in the vacuum of my heart

I will know this. I have it on a CD, I'm sure...

13. (1996) Oh, I really should have known
By the time you drove me home
By the vagueness in your eyes, your casual good-byes

Vague (Mini's Theme), by LS Meisters United

14. (1999) We'll fight, not out of spite
for someone must stand up for what's right
cause where there's a man who has no voice
there ours shall go singing

Familiar. Girl voice.

15. (2002) You waited this long to stop debating
Cuz I'm back, I'm on the rag and ovulating
I know you got a job Ms. Cheney
But your husband's heart problem is complicating

No idea, but I will love it!

16. (2005) Is ya man on the floor?
If he ain't...
Let me know

Run It, Chris Brown! Put this on MY Guilty Pleasures list. Erin adored this song.

17. (2008) I don't know what this is
But you've got me twitchin'
Like you knew you would
I don't know what you do
But you do it well
I'm under your spell

I like this, but I can't pull it!

Having the years helps tremendously for me. I need some kind of cues to get my brain going...

You Better Shop Around. . . . Now all I gotta do is pick one of the eight dozen artists who sang it or covered it. I'll guess the Supremes.

Right! Right! You're bloody well right!
You got a bloody right to say!

I think the title is Bloody Well Right. Now, as to the artist . . . I'll guess Flock of Seagulls.

Misc.
The flyover method is working well. Letting #6 simmer for a couple hours would probably have picked me up one more point for Supertramp, but it wouldn't have been worth it. Onward!

By the vagueness in your eyes, your casual good-byes

for someone must stand up for what's right
cause where there's a man who has no voice
there ours shall go singing

Cuz I'm back, I'm on the rag and ovulating
I know you got a job Ms. Cheney

If he ain't...
Let me know

17. (2008) I don't know what this is

Like you knew you would
I don't know what you do
But you do it well
I'm under your spell

Spoiler
1. (1960) There's some things that I want you to know now
Just as sure as the wind's gonna blow now
The men'll come and the men are gonna go now
Before you tell 'em that you love 'em so now

Shop Around - Smokey Robinson? I didn't think it was that old

Bus Stop - The Hollies

4. (1969) Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries

In The Ghetto - Elvis

5. (1972) But I ain't forgetting that you were once mine,
but I blew it without even tryin'.
Now I'm eatin' my heart out,
tryin' to get a letter through

I know I'm going to hate the fact that I didn't get this one. It is so familiar.

6. (1975) Write your problems down in detail
Take them to a higher place
You've had your cry - no, I should say wail
In the meantime hush your face

7. (1978) I held her close until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine

8. (1981) Life isn't easy from the singular side
Down in the hole some emotions are hard to hide
It's your decision - it's the chance that you take
It's on your head - it's a habit that's hard to break

9. (1984) Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me

The Longest Time - Billy Joel

Darn the luck. I took a vow to stop listening to music every three years, and by mere coincidence, my avowed years included 1960, 1963, 1966 (and why would anybody have listened to anything except the Beatles in 1966, anyway?), etc. I have no doubt that if you had selected music beginning in 1959 and skipping every third yeard until 2007, I would have had a perfect score. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it (until, at least, you next use a song from any of those years.)

Just as sure as the wind's gonna blow now
The men'll come and the men are gonna go now
Before you tell 'em that you love 'em so now
Spoiler
What Blows Better? (The Wind Or The Men) - Mini and The Sluts
2. (1963) I'm gonna drink a lotta coffee, spend a little cash
Make that girl love me when I put on some trash
You can understand why I've got to get back
Spoiler
Actually I'll have a LATTE coffee instead - Bad Puns (Thank you, thank you...still here till Tuesday)
3. (1966) That's the way the whole thing started
Silly but it's true
Thinkin' of a sweet romance
Beginning in a queue
Spoiler
Queue?! Queue?! - We're Not In Britain, Seriously you poor children of the 60's...Was this cool hip-hop for you guys??? Oy.
4. (1969) Then one night in desperation
a young man breaks away
He buys a gun, steals a car,
tries to run, but he don't get far
And his mama cries
Spoiler
But His Dad Says "Hell Yeah Son!" - How To Support A Family
5. (1972) But I ain't forgetting that you were once mine,
but I blew it without even tryin'.
Now I'm eatin' my heart out,
tryin' to get a letter through
Spoiler
Blowing And Eating Huh? - Innuendo Methinks, (And you people claim to have been so clean back in the "good old days")
6. (1975) Write your problems down in detail
Take them to a higher place
You've had your cry - no, I should say wail
In the meantime hush your face
Spoiler
That'll Be $10,000 - Miss Cleo
7. (1978) I held her close until the storm passed
And we fell down laughing in the wet grass
Both our bodies drying in the sunshine, sweet sunshine
Spoiler
And Then We Got Pneumonia - Dumbass Couple
8. (1981) Life isn't easy from the singular side
Down in the hole some emotions are hard to hide
It's your decision - it's the chance that you take
It's on your head - it's a habit that's hard to break
Spoiler
Aw Hell, I Can Get Away With It - O.J.
9. (1984) Once I thought my innocence was gone
Now I know that happiness goes on
That's where you found me
When you put your arms around me
Spoiler
The Longest Time - Billy Joel, And now no one can say I'm a one-trick pony. I got a song from before I was born. My mom loved Barry Manilow and Billy Joel so much that I literally know every song by the opening 4 seconds. One warning - If I hear Copacabana I automatically punch the nearest person...it's a reflex...you don't want to know....
10. (1987) Now I'm walking again to the beat of a drum
And I'm counting the steps to the door of your heart
Only the shadows ahead barely clearing the roof
Get to know the feeling of liberation and relief
Spoiler
Good Lord, Your Arteries Are Clogged! - Impending Heart Attack (Another sick band name...someone should really hire me....)
11. (1990) She likes it neat
And he makes a mess
I take it easy
Baby I get obsessed
Spoiler
I'm Stalking The Crippled Prostitute - Can't Let The Bad Joke Go
12. (1993) Passion or coincidence once prompted me to say-
Pride will tear us both apart.
Well now pride's gone out the window, cross the rooftops, runaway.
Left me in the vacuum of my heart
Spoiler
Ordinary World - Duran Duran, People tell me that Duran Duran is such a fantastic band but this is really the only song of theirs that I know so my response is "ummm...well I think they suck." And I do. The song sounds like whining half the time.
13. (1996) Oh, I really should have known
By the time you drove me home
By the vagueness in your eyes, your casual good-byes
Spoiler
Ya know I feel like I've definitely heard this both in the original and in the movies but I just can't place it...Usually in this game I know it or I don't...argh, do y'all get this feeling every day in this game...it's very irritating....
Now watch this. The best part about knowing these is that I know most of the elderly folk will not. So my ego is already surging and I'm so excited, we're going to do these in capital letters, I don't look smart very often but I'm about too...

14. (1999) We'll fight, not out of spite
for someone must stand up for what's right
cause where there's a man who has no voice
there ours shall go singing
Spoiler
HANDS - JEWEL, Okay this song was veeery popular on the radio for a time so I'm sure some of the up-to-date seniors will knock this one out, brief interlude: For some reason I will forever associate Jewel's "Intuition" with Harry Potter and the Order of The Phoenix. I think this is because said song played endlessly when I was reading said book but now whenever I read OOTP, I get images of Harry running through the Department of Mysteries with "Follow your heaaaaart!" on an endless loop. This is similar to how I forever associate "Shambala" with Jeopardy! because it was my victory song after beating my dad after dinner when I was in my pre-teens...I think he lost on purpose in the beginning...that didn't last long. And I just realized two things 1) It's very good I learned how to act cool before high school and 2) I hope Sprots reads the Harry Potter part b/c no one else is going to understand it. I'm done.
15. (2002) You waited this long to stop debating
Cuz I'm back, I'm on the rag and ovulating
I know you got a job Ms. Cheney
But your husband's heart problem is complicating
Spoiler
WITHOUT ME - EMINEM, This thing played on an endless loop that summer although I'll admit I dabbled in it a bit, though I left rather quickly....Eminem was like pot to me, you try some and then you look back a couple months later and say "What the fuck was I thinking???"
16. (2005) Is ya man on the floor?
If he ain't...
Let me know
Spoiler
RUN IT -CHRIS BROWN, aaah good ole Chris Brown, I'm pretty sure I'll be the only one to nail this one down and probably one of few on the last one...I mean, how many self-respecting adults listen to white rap and bad teenage hip-hop, those were some crappy choices LB, no offense. C'mon, the 00's had some good music!
17. (2008) I don't know what this is
But you've got me twitchin'
Like you knew you would
I don't know what you do
But you do it well
I'm under your spell
Spoiler
MERCY- DUFFY, One of the top songs on my iPod and it still took me a while to get this. I'm pretty darn sure I'll be one of one or two to hit this one 'cuz this wasn't played on the radio a ton that I know of (though I stick primarily to my iPod nowadays) so where the heck would anyone not into today's music have heard it. This was a good pick LB, a little Alternative. I'm feeling it and can we do the years thing again? A lot? Please? I felt so good about myself looking at today's list.....For one day I can compete at this game. Estoy Contento.

As if! I've read all the books a gazillion times, plus I have the ancillary stuff she wrote. You just reminded me I bought three copies of Beedle the Bard at Christmastime, saving one for myself. I think I'll bring it to read on the plane this weekend, so :P to you, youngster.
Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgment, the manner in which information is collected and used.
