Caroline Kennedy withdrawing from consideration

#1 Post by bazodee » Wed Jan 21, 2009 6:43 pm

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Caroline Kennedy told New York Gov. David Paterson she is withdrawing from consideration to replace Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate, the New York Post reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed sources.
Kennedy, the daughter of slain President John F. Kennedy, has never held public office but launched an unusual public campaign to replace Clinton, who has been chosen by President Barack Obama to be secretary of state.

Michael Bennet has never held elective office. He's been very close to Denver Mayor Hickenlooper and is in his second or third year of being Denver Public School Supt. Anyway, I don't think it's all that whack for Kennedy to try. Mike Miles tried to run for U.S. Senate without ever having held elective office either. Ken Salazar sorta stomped him flat. Miles also had a public school supt. background also. Great guy -- woulda made a great Senator.

Several presidents never held or ran for elective office prior to the Presidency.

Dwight Eisenhower, Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant, William Taft, and Herbert Hoover. And, I don't think George Washington did, either!

George Washington was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses prior to the American Revolution and was elected president of the Constitutional Convention after independence.

My thoughts went to: I wonder why??

It has been an awfully long time for a Kennedy to express serious planning for running in some fashion, and then just stop. I can't think of one since FDR kicked ol' Joe himself out of national office consideration.

And as far as running without previous elective office, in Canada with the parliamentary system, it is not unusual for a big cheese cabinet minister type to be brought into cabinet while winning a "safe" seat after that safe seatholder resigns. But starting off at Prime Minister (or provincial Premier) while never having won anything anywhere would be unusual. It did happen in Britain if the PM were to be from the House of Lords, which is constitutionally acceptable. In this relentlessly modern era, it would be expected that a Lord as PM would resign the peerage to plan to run in the Commons, and in fact this is exactly what happened in 1964 when squabbling Tories selected Lord Home (Hyoom pronunciation), who became a commoner, knighted by the Queen, as Sir Alec Douglas-Home.

Andrea Mitchell is reporting that Kirsten Gillibrand is under serious consideration.

She is my congressperson. I do not want to lose her.

Let's have it be Cuomo.

I feel the same way about Ken Salazar, but I lost him anyway.

I want to thank whatever PTB put older brother John Salazar on the House Appropriations Committee, because it will keep him as our Representative.

My money is still on Steve Israel, who is my congressman.
I am about 25% sure of this.

Just appoint Bob Kerrey and be done with it.

It'll be Cuomo.

Put it in the bank.

Shocking I tell ya, just shocking.
I see there is a second thread which has already noted the likely real reason.
