HDTV Update

Works great.

Upgraded to Digital Cable on Tuesday.

"Lost" looked fantastic on it.

I was somewhat amused that, while watching the UNC/Clemson basketball, I found myself thinking that I wished the picture were bigger.

The Panthers have televised a couple of pre-season games on an independent which just started broadcasting in HD. Last august I was wathcing them play and my teen daiugther came in the living room and watned to know how I could watch non-HD football.

Augusta is much more realistic on HDTV. Still nothing like being there - but much closer.

We were going to get an HDTV to replace our small analog set in the kitchen. Over the weekend, we installed the converter box and antenna which we had intended for HS on it. He has our big old analog set. Not only is he too far away from any broadcast antennae for the box to translate the signal properly, he doesn't watch TV anyway because the analog signals were also terrible and he couldn't get the closed captioning. The set is only used for DVDs and games. We took the setup back and gave him a check for his birthday instead. That was probably appreciated more in any case.

Anyway, we hooked up the box and antenna to our kitchen set. Although we are closer to the broadcast antennae, we still don't have the greatest signals. This does not bode well for a digital TV, HD or otherwise. I am not springing for a third cable connection in the house. We probably stick with the little analog set for now. How small do they make digital sets? Our original intent was to mount a decent-sized unit on a wall, but now, I don't know. Seems pointless if the reception is gonna stink.

Although we are closer to the broadcast antennae, we still don't have the greatest signals.

Where in the Boston area are you? and HS?

I live in central Somerville.

I hooked up my DTVPal converter boxes; although they do have the discussed-on-web bugs with the clock signal etc (& no manual fix) for event-timing, they get great reception. I have an old, very low-tech puny indoor Radio Shack mostly-VHF antenna, hooked up long before this move to digital to a Radio Shack amplification device that didn't cost too much either, & I'm getting 85% signal-strength reception on most of the 20 UHF digital stations the converters pull in. Fox, sometimes at 65%, is the weakest.

Fox is the only station I've had go out on me, & that only for a minute. Fox, of course, or rather House, Bones & Fringe on Fox are the reasons I hooked up the converters early, because Fox is no longer broadcasting analog signals in the Boston area.

The DTVPal pluses are supposed to have some of the bugs fixed, & are advertised as having even better reception; I'll get them when my sister gets her coupons, & trade, as she doesn't need the event-timers for the analog sets in her & my Mom's house.

Hadn't occurred to me that golf might be even better on HDTV. Might have to upgrade just for that!

Making my third pilgrimage to Augusta National this spring. Just the practice rounds again but I think I would rather see the tournament on the tube anyway as you can keep up with the action better. More fun to go to the practice rounds where you get a chance to interact with the pros at least a little. Some are more social than others of course. Certain large feline types for example tend to be fairly unsocial.

I've only been once (for practice) - I knew there were slopes on the greens - but until I saw it, I dint relaize you could set up a slalom course on the front of the 14th green.

My father is not HD yet - he likes to come watch golf here. They didn't cable until the mid 90s - he may never go HD. Of course he also tells us that why bother with HD, when you have low def eyes.
