GW wants to vacate with me

If "vacating" is what you do on a vacation. The dates are uncertain, and may not even be in winter, but now that the kids are gone, she wants to spend some money and time on ourselves.

We were considering taking advantage of the current WDW promotion (7 days for the price of 4, including park tickets), but even with the included discounts, that's expensive. We've got a wedding trip to SLC scheduled for the end of May that will cost as much, what with airfare, hotel and rental car.

I am thinking of something more local, like a New England trip. Does anyone have any favorite places, inns, B&Bs, etc., in the region that they would care to share with me and the other BBs? I know I can look things up, and will, but some first-hand knowledge and reviews would be appreciated. Thanks.

What a novel idea!

If you're still thinking about WDW, I'd suggest getting a comparison quote from your AAA office. I know they were 40% cheaper than what Disney was offering directly from their web site. (That wasn't one of the discount deals, though.)

My favorite New England recommendation would be to wait for the warm weather and then take a windjammer cruise in Maine. There are several boats in the fleet; the one I'm loyal to is the Stephen Taber. This is, by no means, your typical luxury cruise; think more like camping on a boat. But it is a relaxing week and an unusual experience.

Love the Inn at Mills Falls in Meredith, NH...there are actually a few inns together and Church Landing is where I stayed, which was the nicest I believe. I went in the winter and had a lake view and a fireplace in my room with a big comfy bed, sitting area and flat screen tv. Plus the spa and restaurants were great. Travelzoo does specials there a lot, I got a great deal when I went.

One of my other favorites is the Inn at Essex near Burlington, VT. They have a culinary school there so you can partake in lessons as part of your experience, or just enjoy the culinary delights. I like to go there or I sometimes stay in Stowe (Stoweflake or Topnotch) and take trips into Burlington. Stowe is also closer to Ben and Jerry's and the cider mill!!

I'm sure there are lots of other great places, you'll get some good ideas here.

Depending on the time of year, as we always went in August, Sept or maybe even October....
Freeport, Maine or that area is lovely. I think we flew into Portland and drove up the coast
to Freeport, making lots of stops along the way. If you want to drive out of Boston,
Sandwich, Massachusetts is a lovely little town close to the water with nice rentals, Martha's Vineyard
has lots of lovely B&B's and plenty of wonderful places to eat.

Don't know if she is still sailing but if an overnight trip is more your speed I did a trip on the Wendameen back in about 1991 during the week of the 4th of July for the Great Schooner Race on Penobscot Bay. Fun although much too cold for July for me! The Wendameen, an early John Alden Schooner that had just recently been renovated, was a fast boat and I think we won the race that day although it wasn't real clear to me exactly where the starting and finishing line where. Then again I didn't much care as I was just there vacating!
