Clearly
is a tough word to use without offending the person to whom one is speaking.
That is especially true if one is defending or trying to explain a difference of opinion.
Clearly, if one was offended, it is not clear that no offense was meant.

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Re: Clearly
I think the only time I use the word 'clearly' is when I say: "Clearly, we are not going to agree on this."
Is that clear?

Re: Clearly
Clearly, I will ignore this objection. At least, that's clear to me, because I used it just the other day, when I thought it seemed appropriate. I cannot remember and I won't keep track of which specific words raise the ire of which people, all of whom I most likely like very much and would not intentionally offend, but probably do from time to time.peacock2121 wrote:is a tough word to use without offending the person to whom one is speaking.

I usually have enough trouble trying to convey what I mean. I don't want to keep a list of otherwise perfectly acceptable words not to use in that conveyance, or I'll have to start all over again.

Re: Clearly
I take "clearly" out of my prose now, and any I am editing (unless it's a quote).
If the thing is clear, it doesn't need to be said it's clear*.
If it's not clear, that word doesn't fit anyway.
*in philosophy papers/editing, I also remove "really" and "actually" because they mean real and actual in very particular ways - using them for emphasis does not make a thing real or actual (like most uses of "literally" are for emphasis rather than accuracy)

Clearly, one must be facile in the language arts to convey meaning instead of inducing anger.
"clearly" should only be used to clarify statements of fact, and not as the precursor to an opinion.
to demonstrate:
clearly, the steelers have the best record of the remaining playoff teams.
that is good
clearly, you are full of shit if you think the ravens will win.
it is not clear that the speaker is full of shit.Possibly, likely to be sure. But not "clearly".
bill oreilly likes to say "clearly" before he gaseously bloviates.
