Was PSM's husband on ABC today?

#1 Post by geoffil » Thu Jan 15, 2009 1:15 pm

Jeremy Piven was on the morning show talking about his high level of mercury. This ailment caused him to bow out of Speed the Plow on Broadway. One of the reporters quoted a Dr. Suchard regarding the effects of mercury on a person. This doctor was from California and an endocrinologist. Was that PSM's hubby?

The bigger question "are reporters reading and quoting from the bored?"

ABC news called Jeff a few days ago to ask his opinion about the matter.

He didn't think that the mercury levels were at a particularly high level for somebody who eats a lot of seafood.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Thanks for letting me know. I am a little late, but it was cool to "see" a BB on TV.

Jeff is a toxicologist. What morning show was it?

I imagine it was Good Morning America - that is ABC's morning show.

It was probably referring to me, even though I'm not an endocrinologist.

I only know of two other Dr. Suchards in California: they're my brothers, and neither of them is an endocrinologist either.

I am on a panel of medical experts that ABC News has collected. They occasionally contact us if they have a relevant medical question, and the issue of Jeremy Piven and mercury came up recently. I sent an e-mail reply, which they have apparently quoted [and I hope have not mis-quoted, which is quite common]. I did not get any warning that I would be quoted, since it appeared that the story had basically died down. Most people appear to assume (probably correctly) that Piven is not seriously poisoned. They actually joked about it on a SNL sketch this last week.

So...does anyone have this on tape, TiVo, or otherwise recorded? I'd like to get a copy.

When the host read Piven a statement from toxins expert Dr. Jeffrey R. Suchard which seemed to debunk his story, Piven seemed to falter a little.

Dr. Suchard said that it's common for fans of fish to have up to six times the normal amount of mercury in their system -- but it wouldn't be a problem until they had hundreds, or even thousands of times the normal levels!

Faced with the docs words, Piven, who stopped showing up to perform in Speed The Plow in mid December -- two months before it was due to close-- told Diane: "You have to understand something -- I'm not a doctor. I don't even play one on TV, Diane. So you have to take everything I say with a grain of salt."

It was on Good Morning America with Diane Sawyer. The quote was displayed on the screen with the name Dr. Suchard, Endocrinologist, but no accompanying picture. Next time it would be nice to see a picture with Zap.

I'm sure that thguy65 is an endocrinologist. He could not be interviewed because he was changing a diaper...

The banner on-screen said he's a toxicologist, not an endocrinologist.

The good news is that Jeff may have a celebrity anecdote for the next time he audtions for WWTBAM. Jeremy Piven hates me... or Diane Sawyer said my name once, but pronounced it incorrectly.

Thanks for that link.

My favorite quote from Jeremy Piven: "On that last Sunday...I sort of passed out at home."

Sort of passed out? I interpret that to mean he went home and took a nap.

Congrats to jsuchard, rising media star.

I think the "Jeremy Piven hates me" story has more potential.

Maybe Jeff should help develop the story by sending Jeremy a friendly note?

People just tend to think that Endocrinologists know everything. :)
