Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/14/09

#1 Post by Obscenely Rich Bastard » Wed Jan 14, 2009 12:37 am

It is not often I get requests from common peasants asking me to do work for them, but I made an exception when that ne'er do well LB asked me to write up a Wacky Wednesday game for his little music contest he's running into the ground like a big Wall Street bank. See, my darling Kiki apparently has a thing for him, and she loves the way he peels an orange for her, so I decided it may be in my best interest to do the lad a favor if I didn't want to find myself sleeping in the servants' quarters tonight....

For my game today, of course I picked songs that remind me of the good life I enjoy as a man of enormous wealth. It was a real pain to write down all these lyrics on the back of hundred dollar bills and submit them to LB.... I mean, I wound up getting the first callous I've had on my hand since I quit my job delivering The Saturday Evening Post. So I hereby demand that everyone plays this game, or I will buy your employer and personally fire your ass on the spot. I will, however, be kind enough to hire one of you back since I need someone to trim my 688379233 acre lawn for me every day....

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and be fortunate you're even getting that in this economy!

1. New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team

2. Some people got to have it
Some people really need it
Listen to me y'all, do things, do things, do bad things with it
You wanna do things, do things, do things, good things with it

3. Tried to make it little by little
tried to make it bit by bit on my own.
Quit the job, the grey believers
another town where I get close to the bone.

4. Dressed up like a million dollar trooper,
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper.
Super-duper!

5. I want my cake wanna eat it too
I want the stars and the silver moon
I spend my money of lottery
My favourite number is 1 2 3, you see
Editor's note: Did Fanny transcribe this lyric!?!?!?

6. You can tell I'm educated, I studied at the Sorbonne
Doctored in mathematics, I could have been a don
I can program a computer, choose the perfect time
If you've got the inclination, I have got the crime

7. So far gone, on your own
You can get along if you try to be strong
But you'll never be strong

8. We wouldn't have to eat Kraft Dinner
But we would eat Kraft Dinner.
Of course we would, we'd just eat more.
And buy really expensive ketchups with it.
That's right, all the fanciest Dijon ketchups!
Mmm.
Mmm-hmm.

9. They shake your hand and they smile
And they buy you a drink
They say we'll be your friends
We'll stick with you till the end

10. I've seen the future, I can't afford it
Tell me the truth sir, someone just bought it

11. She's got big thoughts, big dreams
And a big brown Mercedes sedan
What I think this girl, she really wants
Is to be in love with a man

12. The minute you walked in the joint
I could see you were a man of distinction.

Be sure he gets the points, please so I don't have to come on to LB two days in a row.

Spoiler
1. Nope
2. For The Love Of Money - O'Jays. Or, Donald's Theme.
3. Nope
4. Puttin' On The Ritz - Taco, Gene Wilder, probably some old dead dudes
5. I Wanna Be Rich - Callaway. Now THIS is a lost hit of the early 90s.
6. Opportunities (Let's Make Lots of Money) - Pet Shop Boys. This was the follow-up to West End Girls as the Boys continued to chant rather than sing and STILL sounded like Al Stewart (of Year of the Cat fame).
7. Rich Girl - Hall and Oates. The year was 1977. I was 10. This was the first song I remember hearing on the radio that uttered a really bad curse word. I remember not wanting to sing along to it when my parents were around. Come to think of it, I still don't.
8. If I Had A Million Dollars - Barenaked Ladies, who are neither ladies nor barenaked. This song is constantly on the Adult Alternative channel, Comcast Channel 414.
9. Money Changes Everything - Cyndi Lauper. Not a fan of this song.
10. How To Be A Millionaire - ABC. From the Album How To Be A Zillionaire. Follow up to my favorite ABC song, Be Near Me.
11. Glamourous Life - Sheila E. I saw her in concert when she was the drummer during Prince's Lovesexy tour, 1989. This is the only concert in which I spent the night waiting to buy tickets (does this happen anymore??). The night of the concert, I got REALLY sick with a fever. I went anyway. Tenth row. Don't regret it for a moment.
12. Nope
13. Nope

Spoiler
It may be a sign of the Apocalypse, but I not only know some of these, I know a lot about a couple of them! Bless your sclerotic old heart, ORB.

1. New car, caviar, four star daydream,
Think I'll buy me a football team

Money -- Pink Floyd. I loves me some Pink. One of my prized posessions is an original German poster from Roger Waters' The Wall Live in Berlin concert, which took place on July 21, 1990. I loves me some green, too, but that's another story.

4. Dressed up like a million dollar trooper,
Trying hard to look like Gary Cooper.
Super-duper!

This is the fabu Puttin' on the Ritz, by Irving Berlin. Some guy whose name I don't remember sang it in a Depression-era movie of the same title, then Fred Astaire sang it again in a later film, Peter Boyle sang it in Young Frankenstein, and a strange German youth named Taco made it into a hit with an early MTV video.

6. You can tell I'm educated, I studied at the Sorbonne
Doctored in mathematics, I could have been a don
I can program a computer, choose the perfect time
If you've got the inclination, I have got the crime

I don't know the title, but it has been sung by BobJ, prospective scriptwriter for Lawn Order.

12. The minute you walked in the joint
I could see you were a man of distinction.

Hey, Big Spender, from Sweet Charity by Cy Coleman with lyrics by Dorothy Field. In the original Broadway musical, it was sung by the taxi-dancers, with or without Gwen Verdon. In the movie, it was sung by the taxi-dancers, with or without Shirley MacLaine. Other recordings were by Shirley Bassey, Bette Midler and many others. By coincidence, it also will be sung by myownself (with others) in the 2009 OKC Gridiron Show. My flapper dress is magnificent.

Give me points! Give me some real points!

Oh, Sliver, I think you've also earned us both a JJCP by using the term
Spoiler
taxi dancer
after I did the exact same!

And, more than the JJCP, I'm totally thrilled that there is actually somebody still alive in this day and age besides myself that will casually toss out said term.

and be fortunate you're even getting that in this economy!
Is there a problem with the economy? At the risk of getting political, I don't think there is a problem with the economy itself but there is a severe problem with the people hired to supposedly watch and control it. Nuff said.
