The extreme makeover in Pekin, IL, is being telecast tonight. Pekin's about 40 miles from here. There is to be a viewing party at the Peoria Civic Center: 20 bucks to get in. Says it will help pay off old mortgage and help with real estate taxes.

My b-i-l designed a house once. He is quite disillusioned with the whole process.
That house has been foreclosed on already. I'm thinking this new person has a better idea of what the new house will mean to her besides just cash money, though.

Knowing a great deal is not the same as being smart; intelligence is not information alone but also judgment, the manner in which information is collected and used.

My grandmother's sister's "housemate" was from Pekin. They always pronounced it like Peking, China. When I was a kid I thought it was very exotic, until I found out that it was actually just a city in Illinois.ne1410s wrote:The extreme makeover in Pekin, IL, is being telecast tonight. So was it just my family, or is it actually pronounced "Peking" by the Illini?

Pekin is about 70 miles from Springfield, IL. The first Illinois State Fair was held in Springfield in 1853. "Springfield hosted the fair again in 1854, but that honor was shared by many different Illinois towns during the next several years. By 1892, it had been held at least once in each of the following cities: Alton, Centralia, Chicago, Decatur, DuQuoin, Freeport, Jacksonville, Olney, Ottawa, Peoria, Quincy and Springfield." (source) Finally, Springfield became the permanent home in 1894.
Try as it did, Pekin was never able to compete successfully to host the state fair.
And so, even to this day, people say ...

Fanny:
The city was named for Peking, China. No one I know pronounces it Peking--it is always Pekin. The city is never spelled with a "g".
Are you ready?? The high school nickname/mascot was for many years the Pekin Chinks. I kid you not. They are now called the Dragons.
"Mid westerners have no use for an ending "g". Mark TwainSo was it just my family, or is it actually pronounced "Peking" by the Illini?
