top o' the mornin'®

#1 Post by earendel » Mon Jan 12, 2009 7:11 am

There is big news in Rivendell, which I'll address in another post. As for this post, the church team once again came away with the top prize at the trivia contest on Saturday, but it was a hard-fought battle that came down to a tie-breaker. In a blatant attempt to make sure that a team from the sponsoring church won, the tie-breaker question asked the name of the pastor's first pet. There was enough furor raised from the participants that the question was thrown out and replaced with this: Who was the first Secretary of State? Our team answered correctly, the other team did not. Among the questions that our group missed were:

1. What was the name of Arnold's fish on "Different Strokes"?
2. What actor, who starred on the current TV series E.R was also in a 1980s show of the same name?
3. What is the cheapest and most popular fruit in the world?
4. In what nation will you find the Tana river?
5. What was the real last name of the character "Reverend Jim" from Taxi?

One question we got through a flash of brilliance from yours truly. The question was, "What vegetable did Egyptians place their hands on to swear an oath?" The table couldn't come up with an answer, so just to prevent a blank space, I put down an answer that turned out to be correct. And there was one bad question - it had to be a misprint or misreading. The question was: "When first used in combat in 1176, this device was propelled by a hand-crank." The answer was "submarine", but no one got it right. Had the moderator used the right date (1776), we'd have had it for sure.

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

All but one are correct - but did you know them without looking them up. The one that's wrong is the last one. That's the answer we gave, and were absolutely sure we were right, but later found out we were wrong.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Ignatowski

"Ignatowski was born James Caldwell. He claimed to have been born in Spokane, Washington, although his often-unreliable memory makes this quite open to question. However, he was definitely raised in Boston, Massachusetts as one of three children in a very well-to-do family...

Around this time, Jim changed his last name to Ignatowski, believing it was "Starchild" spelled backwards.
