Whose God
are we one nation under?
It seems so divisive to me.
Can someone give me an interpretation that one who does not worship your God would understand?

I vote for the God of the Old Testament. He was one nasty sumbitch.

Re: Whose God
Actually, except for atheists and agnostics and polytheists, this would not be divisive at all-- anyone who has a monetheistic view of God can fit her/his image of Her/Him into the motto, and be 'right.' As opposed to something like, say, 'One Nation under Allah' or 'One National under Yahweh' or 'One Nation under Ahura Mazda' or 'One Nation under Flying Spaghetti Monster,' which would involve picking out one concept of God out of all the others.peacock2121 wrote:are we one nation under?

For a more specific answer, all that you really need to know is that the God for Whom we are one nation under is the God that I believe in; all others pay cash.
Which also reminds me of an astronaut who went out to the farthest reaches of the universe, and reported back that he had actually seen God. He warned that a lot of people were going to be in a lot of trouble.
"What's the problem?' asked the folks in Mission Control.
"Well," he answered,
Spoiler
"first of all, She's black."
Innocent, naive and whimsical. And somewhat footloose and fancy-free.

Re: Whose God
I prefer the Deuteronomy 28:1-14 God--the God Who blesses me in the city, blesses me in the fields, blesses me coming in, blesses me going out, etc.

That's the beauty - you get to pick. The whole freedom of religion thing. Even free to not pick. What a country!

Seems to me there is no room to chose "no pick" in that one. Seems to me if I know who your God is and you say "We are one nation under God", you are saying we are under your God and not mine.

The One in Christianity has got to be the same as the One in Islam or in Juadaism or whatever.peacock2121 wrote:Seems to me there is no room to chose "no pick" in that one. Otherwise, you don't have One, but Many.
If God truly exists, then I think it is utter hubris for anyone to think their conception of that deity is the "most correct one".

Re: Whose God
Perception is everything. When I say it (honestly, I don't, routinely, say it) but if I were to dissect it, I would be saying "One Nation, under God (whichever God works for you)" not "One Nation, under (my God, only my God, and the rest of you will burn in hell) God." But that's just me and I try to only speak for me. Usually, I fail, but I do try. For a minute or two. I've stayed out of the analog/digital thing although I've nearly bitten through my tongue.Seems to me if I know who your God is and you say "We are one nation under God", you are saying we are under your God and not mine.

Re: Whose God
Reminds me of a joke:
One day a group of scientists got together and decided that man had come a long way and no longer needed God. So they picked one scientist to go and tell Him that they were done with Him.
The scientist went to God and said, "God, or Mr. God, we've solved the secrets of the Universe and can create life in the laboratory, so we've decided that we no longer need you."
God listened very patiently and kindly to the man. After the scientist was done talking, God said, "Very well, I'll go quietly. But first, let's have a contest. Let's make a man, as I made Adam." To which the scientist said, "OK," and bent down and grabbed himself a handful of dirt.
And God said, "Get your own dirt."

I say, "one nation, indivisible," as the Pledge was originally written by the Baptist minister who wrote it.
I see no reason for the "under God," any more than I see a reason for the lead added to gasoline on the 1970s.
