Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/9/09
For this year's first installment of Free For All Friday, we're gonna play a little Bored Buddy hide and seek! There have been LS games before that used titles and artists with BB handles, but this one will operate just a little differently. Each of the following 15 songs has the Bored name of at least one BB hidden somewhere in its lyrics (Obviously, not the set that I have chosen to post!). For each song in which you find a hidden BB, you will get a bonus point, making the non-JJC max score for this game 45 points!
A few ground rules for this game:
You may only use a certain BB once. This will prevent any BB's with names that show up a lot from being used multiple times.
You may only use the BB's well-known Bored handle, or commonly used nickname (None of those pet names that only a few people use, not that I'm singling anyone out here like, oh, Fanny). Numbers in a handle obviously are to be ignored.
Only BB's who are currently in the expanded rankings edition (250+ posts) may be used. This will keep anyone from invoking names of BB's nobody remembers.
You may, and are in fact encouraged to use my most recent expanded rankings list while playing this game. You will find it here:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13265
I will accept any nicknames I use in the rankings since I only use common ones....
Happy searching! This game closes sometime after 7 AM CST on Monday morning.....
1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 1 point for each song in which you find the hidden BB....
1. Jocko says yes and I believe him
When we talk about the things I say
She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
When they're standin' in each other's way
2. The years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
I found myself further and further from my home
3. They will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place
Then they'll tell you can't sleep with somebody else
4. Well, if it rains, I don't care, don't make no difference to me
Just take that street car that's goin' uptown
5. She'll take a tumble on you,
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue
6. Are you going to take me home tonight
Ah down beside that red firelight
Are you gonna let it all hang out
7. So please
Believe in me
When I say I'm spinning round, round, round, round
Smoke glass stain'd bright colors
Image going down, down, down, down
Soapsud green like bubbles
8. The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the Cap'n's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
9. Working hard to get my fill, everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice, just one more time
10. Flyin' high we never took the time
To stop and feel the need
Funny how those years go by
Changing you, changing me
11. So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light
12. I went hiking with Joe Spivey
He developed poison ivy
You remember Leonard Skinner
He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner.
13. Heard about the old time sailor men
They eat the same thing again and again
Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead
Well it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn
14. Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes
15. You never care for secrets I confide
For you I'm just an ornament, somethin' for your pride
Always runnin', never carin', that's the life you live
Stolen minutes of your time were all ya had to give

New Mother Nature - The Guess Who - BB better not be Cal from "come to call" - I came back to this one. It's been bugging me since I started. No other BBs were "hidden" as part of a word in the lyrics. I was just about to submit this as Cal/call, when I realized that the preceding line has "takin' over," which I'm now sure is the one you meant. Bastard!

1. Jocko says yes and I believe him

When they're standin' in each other's way
Extremely familiar!
2. The years rolled slowly past

My Life, Billy Joel, I can't keep Movin' Out from pushing this song out of my head, so fuggedaboud the BB deal (I saw him in concert. I believe I mentioned that yesterday.
)
4. Well, if it rains, I don't care, don't make no difference to me
Just take that street car that's goin' uptown
Black Water, Doobie Brothers, Catfish
5. She'll take a tumble on you,

8. The first mate he got drunk

I'll probably know this when I see this.
Well, this was massively sucky! If I knew enough to get the song I rarely knew enough of the song to get the BB. And a repeat of the "I saw him in concert" schtick. So no soup or JJCP for me, I bet!

I swear I could have gotten most of these if I weren't so frickin' hopeless at concentrating these days. Too much going on in the background, I guess....

Spoiler
I'm going to do the BB portion of today's quiz mostly by staring at the link you provided. I'm not sure it's kosher, so I'm disclosing it up front. I will not peep in protest if you take away all my BB points. Except the one about me. I would have got that anyway.
1. Jocko says yes and I believe him
When we talk about the things I say
She hasn't got the faith or the guts to leave him
When they're standin' in each other's way
No Clue and the smart-ass answer well seems to be dry, too. I don't look forward to a day without smartassitude, so hopefully this doesn't keep up.
2. The years rolled slowly past
And I found myself alone
Surrounded by strangers I thought were my friends
I found myself further and further from my home
Bob Seger (maybe with the Silver Bullet Band?) - Against the Wind. "Living to run and running To Live" hopefully means me
3. They will tell you you can't sleep alone in a strange place
Then they'll tell you can't sleep with somebody else
My Life - Billy Joel "Never said you had to offer me a second chance". Yes, I think calling Billy Joel dreck is an insult to dreck, but that is a stance born not of ignorance but of excessive familiarity. Just as being in the NYC metro area gets you an unfair advantage as far as getting on a certain tv show, growing up there and listening to the radio has its inherent DISadvantages. So does being a 12-or-so-year-old boy when there's a pretty bad show on tv with the word "bosom" in its title. One never loses hope. Like the hick at the Nickelodeon who thinks the train is going to be off-schedule sooner or later.
4. Well, if it rains, I don't care, don't make no difference to me
Just take that street car that's goin' uptown
Black Water - Doobie Brothers "Catfish are jumpin'"
5. She'll take a tumble on you,
Roll you like you were dice
Until you come out blue
Kim Carnes - Bette Davis Eyes. I can't quote you the exact line with the Minus 5 on here in the background but I know there's a line about Greta Garbo. Something about standoffishness I think.
6. Are you going to take me home tonight
Ah down beside that red firelight
Are you gonna let it all hang out
Fat-Bottom Girls - Queen "Left alone with big fat fanny" Didn't need the list for this
7. So please
Believe in me
When I say I'm spinning round, round, round, round
Smoke glass stain'd bright colors
Image going down, down, down, down
Soapsud green like bubbles
Tin Man - America "Or the tropic of Sir Galahad" Ha. Didn't need to use the list for this.
8. The first mate he got drunk
And broke in the Cap'n's trunk
The constable had to come and take him away
Sloop John B - Beach Boys "ate up all of my corn" Ha. Didn't need to use the list for this
9. Working hard to get my fill, everybody wants a thrill
Payin' anything to roll the dice, just one more time
Don't Stop Believin' - Journey. "A singer in a smokey room"
10. Flyin' high we never took the time
To stop and feel the need
Funny how those years go by
Changing you, changing me
Don't know the song. Don't feel the smartassitude. We're effectively snowed in here and the little monkey has now officially ruined all his sippy cups by repeatedly shoving his fingers in the nipple part. We didn't realize that was the reason he was spilling so much milk until this morning, and they're all like that. I've already been called out of the office once by a pretty-darn-frustrated MrsFly to clean up intentional food/milk dumps. I need some damn smartassitude. Hm, how about "Knowing Me Knowing You, The Baby edition" - by, um, Appa. Yeah, that's the ticket
11. So I handed him my bottle, and he drank down my last swallow.
Then he bummed a cigarette and asked me for a light
The Gambler - Kenny Rogers "If you don't mind me sayin', I can see you're out of aces"
12. I went hiking with Joe Spivey
He developed poison ivy
You remember Leonard Skinner
He got ptomaine poisoning last night after dinner.
Camp Grenada - Allan Sherman? Allie Sherman? The one who didn't coach the Giants in the 60s or 70s. I think a "bye bye Allie" chant sounds more right, so THIS must be Allan. "So he reads to us from something called Ulysses" Didn't need the list for that one either
13. Heard about the old time sailor men
They eat the same thing again and again
Warm beer and bread they said could raise the dead
Well it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn
Ugh. Cheeseburger in Paradise - Jimmy Buffet I think that's right, but damned if I know enough of the lyrics of this to figure it out
14. Picture yourself in a boat on a river
With tangerine trees and marmalade skies
Somebody calls you, you answer quite slowly
A girl with kaleidoscope eyes
Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds - The Beatles "plasticene porters with looking-glass ties" No list needed
15. You never care for secrets I confide
For you I'm just an ornament, somethin' for your pride
Always runnin', never carin', that's the life you live
Stolen minutes of your time were all ya had to give
Red Rubber Ball - The Cyrkle, Paul Simon, etc. I'm pretty sure I saw a Ben Stiller movie a few years ago with a punkish version of this on the soundtrack. "Now I know you're not the only starfish in the sea" No list here either
I guess I didn't need the list as much as I thought I would. But i still definitely used it.

I'll just let YOU coordinate all the stuff I'm doing now, and I'LL go have a leisurely lunch at Ponderosa!littlebeast13 wrote:minimetoo26 wrote:I swear I could have gotten most of these if I weren't so frickin' hopeless at concentrating these days. Too much going on in the background, I guess....

I said the list was in play and could be used, so not sure why you thought you were doing wrong....

OK, I'll handle things the Beast way then, which will be to let everything just happen however it may while I slack off. Then I'll join you at The Pond......minimetoo26 wrote:I'll just let YOU coordinate all the stuff I'm doing now, and I'LL go have a leisurely lunch at Ponderosa!littlebeast13 wrote:minimetoo26 wrote:I swear I could have gotten most of these if I weren't so frickin' hopeless at concentrating these days. If I thought I was doing wrong, I probably wouldn't have done it. I thought I was doing right, but I wasn't 100% sure. Thus the disclosure.littlebeast13 wrote:ToLiveIsToFly wrote:I'm going to do the BB portion of today's quiz mostly by staring at the link you provided. "Letting everything just happen however it may" works fairly well until Rain Man is involved. And he's involved in this, which requires planning meals (he won't eat where the bus is taking them,) snacks (in case he doesn't like what's offered at the other school,) pickup, concert wardrobe (usually all ready, but Stephen had his school's concert last night, and they share a dress wardrobe--why buy two of the same thing that gets worn maybe three times a year, I say?!) and staying close to the phone in case anything goes wrong today. I could coordinate a military operation more easily than coordinating something that takes him out of his routine sometimes.littlebeast13 wrote:OK, I'll handle things the Beast way then, which will be to let everything just happen however it may while I slack off. I'll probably just stay with him all day tomorrow, but today I have to leave it to his teacher since it's during regular school hours. My fingers aren't uncrossing until 5:30 today.
Then I get to go to dinner with my m-i-l at 6! Oh, joy!
