Recently watched 2 movies that I loved.

Its a Mad Mad Mad Mad World-Thanks to Jerr 87-IIRC it was his favorite movie.

I ABSOLUTELY POSITIVELY Loved the Right Stuff-Can't believe I had not seen it unyil now.

Just added the (referenced in another thread) Heist movie-that I forget the name of.

"Right Stuff" is a good book and better movie. There are some things which just need to be visualized.

Did you see The Right Stuff straight through without commercials? I hope so. I can't watch it on AMC (actually, except for Mad Men, I can't watch many things on AMC because of the commercials).

Oh, I love The Right Stuff -- one of my favorites! I have it on VHS (2 tapes....it's looonnnngggg!)

Now I'm tempted to watch it sometime over the weekend, but my only working VCR is upstairs. The DVD combo in the living room started chewing up tapes a while back. Yeah, I'm slow to catch up with technology

It's so good that you should buy it on Blu-ray (and a player).

I've never been a huge "Right Stuff" fan, although I really should revisit it. IAMMMMW, on the other hand, is one of my all-time favorite movies.

Unfortunately, neither is available on Blu-ray yet.

I did, however, just pick up Carol Reed's excellent "The Third Man" with Orson Welles and Joseph Cotton on Criterion Blu-ray (and I'm seriously ticked that Welles' magnificent "Touch of Evil" isn't available on Blu yet either, so I had to suffice with the special edition DVD with all three versions (Welles' cut, the Studio's cut, and the cut done for the restoration, using a 53-page memo from Welles' explaining each editorial decision). The opening tracking shot alone made it worth the cost of the disc).

In the same vein-I bit the bullet and bought The African Queen on VHS.

Is it now worth watching black and white again, aside from non-existent theatrical presentations? Is Blu-Ray and a good TV good enough, in other words?

I'm not sure I understand the question. It's never been NOT worth watching black and white.

"The Third Man" in itself is a great movie, black and white or not. Seeing it in Blu-ray is a definite improvement over standard DVD (and light-years ahead of VHS), but a Criterion Blu-ray makes it the best of the best. Criterion makes sure the transfer from film to video is as pristine as possible, and packages the movie with the best possible special features, from interesting and informative commentaries to fascinating featurettes.

"The Right Stuff" is one of my all-time favorite flicks. (I looked all over the place trying to find the DVD some time ago and was about to the point of ordering online when I finally found a copy at a B&N in Milwaukee.) Those of you who have seen the movie likely understand my occasional references to "Alan Shepard's prayer". And, if I tell you that our local school's fight song is "The Marine Hymn", you might now understand why I always have a smirk on my face every time the band strikes up the school song at a game.

Although I have a hunch that the movie buffs among us learned of this long ago, I was quite surprised recently to read the tragic story of the actress who played Nurse Murch:

Apparently there is an audio clip of the incident out there. I have no desire whatsoever to listen, though.

I remember reading about the accident, but did not know of her connection to the Tubes until now. Theirs was the first concert I ever paid to see.
