5th Grader thread

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Sat Dec 20, 2008 1:00 pm

Last night's episode was the second half of the "Mystery Desk" special, featuring last season's 5th Graders. We picked up with the contestant who had his Mother In Law sitting in the Mystery Desk.
Spoiler
He was down to his last choice of lifelines, between Cody and his MIL. With Jeff Foxworthy putting lots of pressure on him, he chooses his MIL. And for $300K, he gets a 5th Grade U.S. History question: The Missouri Compromise of 1820 resulted in what other state being admitted to the union?

The contestant didn't know, didn't want to guess, and didn't want to trust his MIL's answer by using his Copy, so he walked away with $175K. Jeff played up the issue big time:

Jeff: The correct answer begins with "M".

<Suspenseful pause>

Jeff: Your MIL's answer was Minnesota.

Audience: Ooooooooh!

<Suspenseful pause>

Jeff: But the correct was Maine.

What a surprise! :roll:
The second contestant was a real 5th Grade teacher. Her Mystery Desk lifeline was her own 5th Grader daughter.
Spoiler
Naturally, she called on her daughter first. But since she also chose the 1st Grade questions first, she didn't need any help (despite taking a long time to identify a Washington D.C. photograph as the U.S. Capitol and not the Supreme Court).

And after that, I kind of lost interest. I was sorting through my bookshelf for more books to donate to the Friends of the Library. The contestant walked away with $100K or so, IIRC.

Best line during this run came from Nathan.

Jeff: Does it put you under any more pressure, to be helping a real 5th Grade teacher?

Nathan: No, no more pressure than usual. Which isn't much.

WTG, Nathan! :twisted:

Let me be the one to say it, my cousin. I can't believe you still watch this show, mon.

Marley, where would you suggest would be the best place on line to get a transcript of this show's questions on a regular basis?

Go to their web site: http://www.fox.com/areyousmarter/

There's a link for their official message board; someone there usually posts all the Q & A for the shows there. I used to link to that, then they changed the way their board worked, so that you had to register just to read the messages. I refused to do that, on general principles. I just looked again and they seem to have reversed that policy--I can read it again! But now I can't find a thread with the Q & A for this week's episodes. <sigh>

Be warned that the discussion over there usually makes our most inane gratuitousness look sophisticated. :P

You can also watch all the episodes online at Hulu:

Even PSM did, the other night. When it would have been too much effort to change channels with the remote. :P

Well, FWIW I do indeed watch the show - in fact I watched both episodes last week - the one with the minister whose daughter blew the $1M question last season and the one with the actual 5th grade teacher (who turned out to be less smart than her students, evidently). In fact I even submitted an application to be a contestant, but have heard nothing back from the show.

If you'll recall, I even initiated a thread during the time that Marley was at Disney World. I also watch "Don't Forget the Lyrics".

I watch, but only on DVR. That way I can whip through it in about 5 minutes (the actual playtime).

I confess, I watch too. And would like to apply to be a contestant. Money is money and you do what it takes to make some. I'll never get rich (or even well-off) teaching skating, etc. so why not play a fool for money. After all, I can do it for no money also, but money is better.
