2009 Bored Ghoul Pool

#1 Post by NellyLunatic1980 » Sun Dec 21, 2008 11:15 am

In keeping with our beloved Eyegor's tradition, the contest that everybody loves to hate is back for a full year. So let the flames begin. :P

The lines are now open for lists, but first, here are the rules and scoring processes:

RULES

1. Compile a list of 20 famous people that you think will pass away between January 1, 2009-December 31, 2009.
1a. Your picks must be alive at the time that you submit your list; otherwise, you will be required to pick a new name.
1b. If one of your picks passes away before midnight Eastern on January 1, 2009, you will be required to pick a new name.
1c. Be sure to give a short description of each name in order to prevent any confusion amongst similarly-named people. Make sure that the people are at least moderately well-known. A Wikipedia entry and/or a Google count of at least 50,000 hits should suffice.
1d. No relatives of famous people are allowed unless they've become famous on their own merits.
1e. No non-human picks.
1f. No picks under 18 years old.
1g. No death row picks.
1h. No hostages or prisoners of war.
1i. No picks solely famous for their illness(es).
1j. And, for the love of God, please no picks famous solely for being really, really, really old.

2. Rank your 20 names from 1-20, with #1 being the name that you think is most likely to pass away.

3. Submit your list to me (not to 'gor) either through the Bored PM or to my e-mail (NellyLunatic1980@aol.com) by January 5, 2009, at 11:59 PM Eastern. If you send your list through e-mail, be sure to put your Bored name in your e-mail so I know who you are.

SCORING (changed for 2009)

A person who passes away is worth points equal to 125 minus his/her age. The older a person is, the fewer points that person can score.

A bonus is awarded depending on what position on your list that person is located. #1 picks score 20 bonus points, #2 picks score 19 bonus points, on down to the #20 pick for 1 bonus point.

10 point bonus for taking the first death of 2009. This is doubled if the death occurs on January 1.

15 point bonus for taking the last death of 2009. This is doubled if the death occurs on December 31.

5 point bonus for deaths picked by only three participants ("trio").

10 point bonus for deaths picked by only two participants ("duet").

15 point bonus for deaths picked by only one participant ("solo").

10 point bonus for picking two deaths that occur on consecutive days.

20 point bonus for picking two deaths that occur on the same day.

50 point bonus for picking three deaths that occur on the same day.

You get zero points if you personally kill any person on your list.

The 2008 Bored Ghoul Pool Jr. will close on midnight Eastern of January 1, 2009. The final results and winner will be announced two weeks from today.

This is horrific, disgusting and disturbing! What sick person would make a contest out of this, shame on you!

I love it, my entry'll be coming along soon.

I, of course, will not be playing.

Doing otherwise would be a violation of gh0stly professional ethics.

I am indifferent to the game.

I will not be playing due to indifference.

I am not indifferent to the game. As I have maintained for years, I do (to borrow Clem's phrase) find it horrific, disgusting and disturbing. Virtually any person's death brings immense grief to someone else. This is an area where I personally draw the line in the sand of what determines "game" and "sport."

The one time I played I tried to only choose bad guys. Chilean dictators, very bad criminals, like that. It still was not much fun for me. I appreciate the aspect of the game that makes it about learning about current events, but that's not enough to sway me toward playing again.

I don't mind if others play, of course, but I am glad that now the interface will make it easier to avoid the cheers and points commentary when someone dies. If players could keep such comments inside the posts and not in the headers that would be nice.

I will be checking to see who includes Bea Arthur on their lists, though, and Muhammed Ali.

How fun!

So we can play a "game" and get points should the unthinkable happen to any of these people:

Ed Toutant
Nancy Christy
Michael Shutterly
Jeff Gross
Ogi Ogas
Lyn Payne
Kathy Hempel
John Corbett

I think there should be a major bonus for anyone who picks two of us who die in the same incident.

I should've put a restriction in the rules on picking Bored members.

But then again, Eyegor never did.

Then there should also be a restriction in the rules on picking Bored members' relatives, loved ones, acquaintances, friends, co-workers, mentors, heroes and idols.

Most of them are restricted from being picked anyway (see Rules 1c and 1d).

Once again, I will not be a part of the Ghoul Pool as this is the most in bad taste game ever.

However, for a small fee or cookies I may be willing to "off" people on your list, thus giving you the win without breaking the above GP rule. :D

That may be outside of the rules, but it's still illegal... unless you're planning on offing Osama bin Laden. Regardless of whether you participate in the BGP or not, everybody wins when bin Laden is dead.
