The emergency meeting could very well be to make sure all managers are braced for the anticipated pre-Super Bowl influx of orders and installations.

A bit of background (condensed version): I was hired as an installer back in 2004, and was promoted to a salaried position (quality assurance supervisor) eight months later. Although my primary focus was on training, QC, and repairs (fixing stuff that absolutely refuses to be fixed), my responsibilities also included assisting the location manager wherever help was needed. Along the way, I discovered that, although I was glad to help with whatever had to be done, I had no desire to take on a location manager's responsibilities then or in the future.

About a year ago, things really got stupid-crazy at the shop. The manager had a stroke, we had a project that involved well over ten thousand jobs that needed to be taken care of (we brought in hordes of outside techs to help, but it was still insanity), and - in the meantime - our warehouse operations had gone straight to hell, thanks to the guy who was running warehouse at the time. I was working six days a week, roughly twelve hours a day, and all of it in a pressure-cooker. Shortly after the first of the year, the big bosses approached me and asked if I wanted to take over the warehouse on a full-time basis (I had already been spending a goodly amount of time trying to help clean up that mess - with contributions from the then-current warehouse guy that ranged from Minimal Help down to Borderline Sabotage). I told them that I was willing to take on the challenge - but I was concerned about how it would affect my status with the company as warehouse is not normally a salaried position, and the combined lower hourly rate and maximum 40 hours would have left me in a very serious predicament. TPTB reassured me that they would make it work; they would keep me classified as a QAS, but working out of the warehouse - a situation that worked out well for all involved, IMO.

But that was a year ago. Frankly, I am worried that this situation may no longer be as viable as it was then. If they have to make cuts, my position/pay scale is something that I fear they may be looking at closely. I only hope that they consider what I have done for them in the past - especially in the last year, where I managed to track down and undo a good deal of the damage done by my predecessor.

OTOH, it could be as my boss says; they may simply be looking at some other high-priority operational areas (of which I am aware) that do not involve staff cuts. Still, the timing has me very concerned.

Update: This was all that it turned out to be; they just happened to have the meeting a couple of days after Christmas. In fact, we are looking at business picking up for a while, so things are looking good right now.

Hopefully I will have a bit more time and energy to get back into posting/chat/etc now; things were pretty (very) hectic for the past month or so between projects, the boss going on vacation, and so forth. For all of that, though, things were nowhere near what I went through at work a year ago.

So I'm alive and well. Although there are likely some who would tell me that I am not well.....

I work for a Dish Network provider. I no longer do any installations myself, as I am now managing the warehouse. (Which is fine by me...let the young bucks tote those ladders and rolls of cable...)

Not today, bud...this is day 2 of my weekend. Or day 1.5, actually; I had to go in for a half-day yesterday to wrap up the EOY inventory and help re-issue equipment to the guys. Trust me, it was a PITA over the last few days having to check things in, count them and then - only after getting the green light from corporate - handing it back out again...
