Pittsburgh Pirates legendary pitcher, of a "liver ailment." He'd been on the transplant list for a while, I believe. Dock supposedly threw a no-hitter against the Padres in 1970 despite being on acid at the time. He also supposedly attempted to hit every batter on the starting lineup of the Cincinnati Reds during a single game in '74.
Dock retired to Victorville, CA, and became a drug counselor after breaking his own addictions.

RIP Dock Ellis
There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Re: RIP Dock Ellis
I believe that he was on LSD when he pitched the infamous game just because it's consistent with his known drug and alcohol use, and forgetting that he was pitching on a particular day would be consistent too.
I think he's right about this:
In recounting his career as a counselor, Ellis told The St. Petersburg Times in 1989 that “education is the only way.”
As he put it, “If you can teach kids A-B-C, you can teach them about drugs and alcohol.”

Joins Clemente, Stargell, Bob Moose and Danny Murtaugh in dying young, or relatively so, from the great 1971 championship team.
