The Mindbenders. I answer this here because of the clue that says this version hit #2 on the charts. But technically it's their debut single ONLY if you discount the earlier "Game of Love" because it was by WAYNE FONTANA and the Mindbenders. I myself would consider "Game of Love" their first hit. Additional trivia. Some of the Mindbenders later evolved into Hotlegs ("Neanderthal Man"), then 10cc.

7 I could tell you Mud was a popular 70's glitter-rock band in the UK that scored with hits like "Tiger Feet" but did absolutely nothing in the U.S., but I have no clue who the singer was.

the only classical adaptation I remember as a big hit in '65

was A Lover's Concerto by The Toys and IIRC it did reach exactly #2 on Billboard. I also remember it being spoken of as due to Bach, but maybe it was Clementi. OR even Roberto Clemente. I feel twigged -- this is My Favourite Year for music and I cant say for sure. The only thing I can surely say is that it was not Hang On Sloopy.

Groovy Kind of Love was 1966, not 1965 so I feel assuaged. It does seem to be the same _____ o tune as A Lover's Concerto, slowed down, no? or almost? My unmusicianly ear had never noticed that and is probably wrong, but anyhow.

Heh, I thought Floyd Cramer did the original version. That and Phil Collins' cover are the only versions I'm familiar with.
