What's happened to it? We have yet to see it in our area.

It hasn't opened here, yet, either. Probably just the larger markets, so far. There's been a lot of good press for it, though.

Though the 'rags to riches' love story is slated to release nationwide in Janurary 2009, 'Slumdog Millionaire' will be shown in limited release starting November 12th. Directed by Danny Boyle, 'Slumdog Millionaire' stars Brit-born Dev Patel (Jamal), Madhur Mittal (Salim) and Freida Pinto (Latika), as three kids who move from the bottom of Mumbai's slums to the rich top in different ways - one brother (Dev Patel) wins 'Who Want to Be a Millionaire', while his older brother Salim (Madhur Mittal), uses a gun and power to gain riches.
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Millionaire opened at one of the art theaters here in Atlanta this weekend on one screen. The same theater is also the only one in town showing Milk on two screens. We saw Milk (excellent film) last night and there were huge crowds for a Sunday night for both Milk and Millionaire.

What they are doing for both Milk and Millionaire is what is common for acclaimed but tough-to-sell to general audience films like these and is known as a platform opening. First, NY and LA to get favorable reviews; then art theaters in other major cities (where these films are now); then wider release in the major cities and art theaters in smaller cities; then sometime in January (to take advantage of critic's awards and Oscar/GG nominations), wider release. They have successfully used this strategy with films like Juno to make them reasonably profitable commercially.

I expect that both movies will be opening here in Atlanta on Christmas in several additional locations.

I saw Slumdog Millionaire here in Minneapolis last Saturday night.

The bad news: This movie is only playing at a single theater here in the Twin Cities metro area.

The good news: What a great movie! (even ignoring it's thematic foundation in a certain game show :-)

The even better news: a friend of mine who works at this theater tells me that this movie has smashed this theater's previous record for most sellout showings and it is undoubtedly headed for much wider release as well as [well-deserved, IMO] Oscar buzz.

Obligatory trivia question:

What was the previous record-holding movie for sellout showings at my local art-house theater? A movie that all of you undoubtedly saw or at least heard of.

That might be correct at your local theater, but my choice made twice as much money nationally.

Nothing was wrong with the question. My guess was the top-grossing art-house film of all time.
