Blog about a UK WWTBAM taping

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Wed Dec 03, 2008 10:33 am

I usually don't bother posting links to stories about the UK version of the show, but I saw this one from the Borehamwood & Elstree Times and I thought that Borehamwood was just a delightful sounding place for the Bored. 8)

http://www.borehamwoodtimes.co.uk/blog/ ... ignorance/

The article starts with a report of everyone missing a Fastest Finger question. They still have the FF in UK? <sigh>

The bulk of the article is a complaint about some ethnic pejoratives used by the warm-up guy (one of which I had to Google) and some other insensitve jokes by him and host Chris Tarrant. But in the interest of ontopicosity, this is the part that interested me:
Then about 20 minutes later, 81 per cent of the audience helped a bewilderingly cheerful woman lose £19,000 — apparently this was the highest ever wrong percentage in ‘Ask the Audience’.

This was despite the floor manager urging everyone at the start of the show not vote unless absolutely sure of the answer.
(Bolding in the above quote is mine.)

The warm-up guy specifically instructs the audience not to guess on the ATA. This is how it should be!

I don't think he can walk all the way up to Ithaca, and he hasn't gotten his game check yet, so a taxi ride's out of the picture.....

He'll lure Marley to the city with the promise of an audition and do the dirty deed there. He's sneaky like that...........

I can't kick Marley's ass, he came to my taping so I like him.

Besides I realize Fanny is upset that I don't like her enough and thus is taking gratuitous shots at me. It's ok.
I'll give her time to get over it.

If 81% was the highest ever wrong percentage in ‘Ask the Audience’, America topped that record just yesterday (December 2nd, 2008).

Yeah, that was a bad one. It's not clear from the blog entry if they're talking about 81% being the total for all wrong answers or if that was the vote for a single wrong choice, though.

Actually it was. It was 81% for one wrong answer.

ATA was 88% "wrong" on my glowing spud question.

I wonder what the money tree is these days on UK WWTBAM. It must have changed, if the audience can be blamed for costing the contestant 19K.

Wikipedia says they changed the stack to 12 questions, as of August 2007:
£500
£1,000
£2,000
£5,000
£10,000
£20,000
£50,000
£75,000
£150,000
£250,000
£500,000
£1 million

Safe havens are now £1,000 and £50,000.

Article author wrote:So 81 per cent of those who voted thought that the only time alcohol was allowed in the House of Commons was during the state opening of Parliament.

Did they not recall Kenneth Clarke sipping his whisky while cutting duty on alcohol in a Budget speech back in the Nineties, I wanted to shout?
If 81% thought "the only time alcohol was allowed in the House of Commons was during the state opening of Parliament", that must have been a single wrong answer, as that statement couldn't represent more than one answer.
