I think I'm beginning to get a handle on SSS's bitterness. Hilary must've promised him the White House movie critic job if she won.

These people are unknown to me.

In the 19th century, the SoS job was a stepping stone to the presidency.The SoS was often the Heir Apparent, or the runner-up to his party's nominee for POTUS.
During the last century, the job has called for a professional background, rather than political connections.I say go with the pro.
