Not Sure How to Title This

#1 Post by trevor_macfee » Sat Nov 29, 2008 7:51 am

I have resisted the urge to put anyone on a foe list. But it's time. To turn the "Prayers Requested" thread about a tragedy that has affected someone on this Bored in a personal way into a political screed is just . . . I am without the vocabulary to describe it. The title of the thread is "Prayers Requested." Not, "Let's take this opportunity to get on the same tired political soapbox." I guess at least the post is bipartisan in its inappropriateness, taking shots at both the current and incoming presidents. It certainly shows no consideration whatsoever to the BB who posted his sadness and sought the support of those on this Bored.

I really do enjoy reading opinions that challenge mine, that make me think and even sometimes to reconsider my views. But, revulsion is not a helpful emotion.

Free speech is important, and I value it here. But just because someone has the right to say anything does not mean I have to listen to everything.

(This was originally posted in the "Prayers Requested" thread, but I edited that post and moved it to a new topic when I realized by responding there I was doing exactly what I was criticizing).

You might want to title it:

Sirge, please be more appropriate

or

Sirge, please move your response to it's own thread

or something like that.

Trevor, I have found the foe list to be mostly worthwhile. You can still read a post by anyone, but it requires an extra click, and that's often just enough to realize you don't want to deal with it right then.

Over time, it becomes obvious which posters invite that extra-click barrier for you. There is nothing arrogant about it. You are protecting yourself from a known irritant.
