Lyrically Speaking Day 14 - 11/28/08
Hope everyone's well-rested, well-fed, well-recovered from two of the worst football games of the year. Have you answered Wednesday's LS yet? If not, it's open until noon Eastern today, and this one is open until noon Eastern tomorrow. I'm personally trying to get the sound of Barry Manilow singing Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" on the Today show this morning out of my head. I love having the day after Thanksgiving off, but that's just torture right there.
So here are some songs for you. Standard stuff, one point each for title and artist, no outside sources, yada yada. Have fun.
1. Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothing I would rather do
Going down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too
2. Now, Daddy ran the whiskey in a big-block Dodge
Bought it an an auction at the Mason's Lodge
"Johnson County Sherriff" painted on the side
Just shot a coat of primer then he looked inside
3. Workin' so hard like a soldier
Can't afford a thing on TV
Deep in my heart I am warrior
Can't get food for them kid
4. She pictures the broken glass, she pictures the steam
She pictures a soul with no leak at the seam
Let's take the boat out, wait until darkness
5. Third boxcar, midnight train
Destination, Bangor Maine
Old worn out clothes and shoes
I don't pay no union dues
6. Read between the lines
What's fucked up and everything's alright
Check my vital signs
Know I'm still alive and I walk alone
7. Like a band of gypsies we go down the highway
We're the best of friends
Insisting that the world keep turning our way
8. He's got this dream about buyin' some land
He's gonna give up the booze and the one night stands
And then he'll settle down, there's a quiet little town
And forget about everything
9. I'm leaving you for the last time, baby
You think you're loving, but you don't love me
I've been confused, out of my mind lately
You think you're loving, but I want to be free
Baby, you've hurt me
10. What do you think you'll do then?
I bet that'll shoot down your plane
It'll take you a couple of vodka and tonics
To set you on your feet again
TOTALLY UNRELATED TO ALL THE OTHERS BONUS SONG (since I wanted to use this song today, but it didn't fit with the others):
I'm gonna do just what I please
Gonna wear no socks and shoes
With nothing to do but feed all the kangaroos

There is something wrong in a government where they who do the most have the least. There is something wrong when honesty wears a rag, and rascality a robe; when the loving, the tender, eat a crust while the infamous sit at banquets.

Copperhead Road - Steve Earle. He's one of those like Dan Bern, where when he's bad, he's almost worthless, but when he's good we get things like this, like the entire "I Feel Alright" album, like most of "El Corazon" (especially Taneytown) like "My Old Friend the Blues" (a song so perfect that even the Proclaimers' version sounds good), like The Wire. And Mike, if you like Steve Earle, and (like, unfortunately, most of the world) you haven't listened to Robbie Fulks yet, you're in for a real treat. I'd recommend starting with "Let's Kill Saturday Night"

King of the Road - I kinda like R.E.M.'s version, but they're so drunk they never get to this verse, so I have to say Roger Miller. I believe in the liner notes to R.E.M.'s Dead Letter Office they say something about how if there was any justice in this world Roger Miller should be able to sue them for what they did to his song. This is one of the few things I've ever made money performing. But I suspect that what R.E.M. said about their own performance goes triple for me.

Okay, so apparently I"ve managed to not master the spoiler thing on this newest version of the software. Rather than laboriously typing again, since I'm not really playing this month anyway, I'll just apologize for not staying current, and then go RTFM.
I think I got 8 right, plus the bonus, BTW. And I will have to check out the artist Bobby mentions. It's been way too long between discoveries for me, and, as PSM knows, I"m a big Steve Earle fan.

You're spoiler is just fine. Try clicking on that big black area in your original post, and it'll all appear.
What you did was to put the standard spoiler tag (without the "=" before the closing bracket) around the quote tags....and that's just fine. If you'd used the "=" version, it would have put that "Reveal" thingie instead of the big black box....which is just fine, too (I don't discriminate). You also could have put individual tags (of either type) around just your answers to each question, and that would be OK, too.

That's funny. When I view my original message, all I see is a huge blank space. No black lines or anything. I tried clicking on random places in the blank area, thinking maybe the black just didn't show up, but nothing appeared. So I just assumed I screwed up the spoiler thingie.
