5th grader thread

#1 Post by earendel » Tue Nov 25, 2008 7:18 am

In Marley's absence I feel compelled to keep this topic alive.

Last Friday was another celebrity edition, featuring Rick Fox's carryover appearance and Jenni Garth's time in the classroom.

Rick, despite being a college graduate (from UNC) didn't fare well on the show. He had to use a cheat on a question about the family of instruments to which the bassoon belonged, then ran into a geography question that really stumped him.
Spoiler
In what U.S. city do the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers come together to form the Ohio River?

Rick focused on "Ohio" and mentioned Cleveland and Columbus, but didn't think either of them was right. So he decided to peek at his classmate's answer. Francesca's response was "Missouri". Rick knew that was a state, so he ended up selecting "St. Louis" as his answer and exited with $25K.
After that it was time for Jenni Garth. She got to the $100,000 question, which was a 4th grade ancient cultures question.
Spoiler
In Greek mythology what was the name of the three-headed dog that guarded the underworld?

Jenni didn't know so she peeked at her classmate's answer. Jonathan had "Serberus". She went with his answer; Jeff Foxworthy said that spelling didn't count.
Then it was on to the $175,000 question, in the category 5th grade music:
Spoiler
The 18th century classical music composer Wolfgang Mozard was born in what present-day country?

Jenni had no clue and didn't want to risk losing money so she walked away. Jonathan's answer wasn't shown.
I can't believe I'm still watching this show.

So where is Marley, anyway? I realize it's getting close to his busy time of year, having to haunt so many Scrooges and all.

I believe he is Orlando visiting WED's frozen head.
I believe in the usefulness of useless information.

And he didn't take a laptop or smart phone with him in order to keep in touch?

From "The Daily Game Show Fix":

****GEORGIA SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT, "5TH GRADER" MILLIONAIRE, DECLARES BANKRUPTCY

Even the elected officials are not exempt. Georgia School Superintendent Kathy Cox, who won $1 million on "Are You Smarter
Than a 5th Grader?" in September, declared bankruptcy last week.

However, Cox says she still intends to fulfill her promise to donate her winnings to two schools for the deaf and one for the blind
in Georgia.

Cox and her husband John declared bankruptcy after his homebuilding business, Pebble Hill Homes, collapsed financially. The
Coxes listed $3.5 million in liabilities and less than $650,000 in assets, according to a report from ABC News.

The Chapter 7 petition was filed November 17. The school chief is paid $125,000 a year in her elected post but said she could not
support the family on her salary alone.

Chapter 7 allows debtors to keep and continue paying for some assets, including homes and cars.

The Coxes' biggest asset is a home in Peachtree City, south of Atlanta, valued at $450,000. The couple owes more than $33,000 on
two car loans, according to court records.

Thanks for doing that, ear! 8)

Answering "Missouri" when they're asking for a city--this sure isn't last year's class!

Ouch!

Since Kathy wasn't identified as a celebrity contestant, with her winnings automatically going to charity, I was among those speculating what type of tax complications her huge donation would cause. Now there's Chapter 7 on top of that. Oy!

Interestingly, at the end of the show they showed previews for the next show (December 5, I think) and if I'm not mistaken, the children were from last year's show. So either it's a "visiting class" or they're showing one that was taped last year and not shown then for some reason.
