Though I could deduce the answer, I never have heard of "reading period" in terms of college (or law school).

A few classes had a "dead period" before finals.

In my day (BA '75) it was a "reading period". However my youngest son, who came in from college last night as we were watching the recording, said that they know it as "dead period" as you mentioned.

A few classes had a "dead period" before finals.
They called it reading day at my college. I also heard it called dead day at another school.
