I'm working through yet another massive data call with a short suspense date; however my boss has given me permission to ignore the due date (which is Thursday) because there's no way we'll be able to comply. The data call was actually issued from Washington last month but didn't filter down to our level until yesterday.

On a totally different subject, elwing and I are having a bit of a disagreement. She wants to purchase a new mattress - our current one, although it is less than five years old, has not held up well (my side of the bed is very saggy and there are lumps in various places). The mattress has been replaced once already while in warranty. elwing wants to purchase one of those "sleep number" beds and has been sending me links to various models. However I'm balking at the price - the least expensive one costs more than our first new car did (back in the 70s, admittedly) and I can't see investing that kind of money.

What is it with mattresses these days? We bought a new one 4.5 years ago, that turned lumpy after 2 years, so it was replaced under warranty. The new one was not any better, and rather than going back to the store again, we just bought another from from a different store. We have to have the firmest possible. Couldn't even talk hubby into looking at the "sleep number" ones.

Just remember... you get what you pay for, and you won't be "getting much" if you don't pony up for the sleep number bed.

As someone who can "sleep anywhere" as long as I am lying down & am not directly on a hard board floor or on stuff like springs from mattresses poking me in the back etc:

I would go the futon route & am in fact pursuing it. They tend to compress evenly, rather than get lumps or poke you with springs. When it has compressed evenly enough that you feel you are lying on a board (or before that) you replace it. And not for what a car costs.

Whatever kind of mattress you get, you will probably feel better about replacing it in 5 years if it didn't cost the earth, & I bet the consensus will be that it will need replacing in 5 years anyway, no matter what it cost. Not if you're me, but anybody else would say it would need replacing.

All I can say is go as firm as possible. Our new mattress was too hard I softened it up buy buying more mattress pads and pillow tops.

One of Jeff's co-workers bought a mattress that was too soft and there was nothing he could do about it.

Try the sleep number bed first.

I was at a hotel with one and really didn't like it.
