Famous college basketball coach from the 1950's, who won a national championship at Cal in 1959 (beating Jerry West's West Virginia team) and then coached the 1960 Olympic team, the best ever assembled under "amateur" rules, featuring West, Oscar Robertson, and Walt Bellamy among others.
Newell retired from coaching after that at age 44, but he ran coaching clinics the rest of his life which NBA stars from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to Shaquille O'Neal attended to improve their game.
Age 93.
