The girls are happy. Our Superintendent just called, school is cancelled for tomorrow. School has never been cancelled for them, so this is big.

It's one thing to watch these fires on TV. To see it for real is, well, unreal. I remember flying home from the midwest or FL one year, at night, and seeing the fire lines all over SoCal. That was really freaky.

Maddie has Mock Trial practice today at Chapman Law School. That hasn't been cancelled.

Is that in Orange, or do they have a satellite campus? If Orange, the air should be better than at home. Aren't any freeway closures way east of you?PlacentiaSoccerMom wrote:Maddie has Mock Trial practice today at Chapman Law School. That hasn't been cancelled.

I just checked Sig Alert, and it appears that the traffic is moving at a normal pace, so I will try taking her there via the Freeway.
The 91 Freeway has been closed at Imperial, but I am going to take the 91 to the 55 and get off at Chapman.
The 57 has also been closed between Lambert and the 60 Freeway.

I had forgotten about Diamond Bar burning. That's up on the north end of the 57.PlacentiaSoccerMom wrote:The 91 Freeway has been closed at Imperial, but I am going to take the 91 to the 55 and get off at Chapman.

Have you ever been through the traffic circle in Orange? If so, please disregard what follows.
It is at Chapman and Glassell, a little west of Chapman Law School. It is one of the few "roundabouts" in the area. It has a park (and fountain, I think) in the middle of it, and it is surrounded by buildings that haven't changed (in appearance) in decades. The drug store is where they filmed "That Thing You Do."

We drove through there to drop Maddie off at Chapman Law School. Until my parents separated when I was six, they lived in Orange and I remember walking with my dad to the circle to get ice cream cones.Estonut wrote:I had forgotten about Diamond Bar burning. Going through there makes you feel like you've stepped back in time, especially if you're cycling or walking.PlacentiaSoccerMom wrote:We drove through there to drop Maddie off at Chapman Law School. I can't see the fire from my bedroom because it's moving towards Diamond Bar, away from us. The air, however, has gotten worse. I had to go outside to pick up Maddie and take Zap to pee and just being out for five minutes made my lungs burn.

No, like Maddie, he doesn't enjoy eating veggies.TheConfessor wrote:Maybe Zap has been eating asparagus.PlacentiaSoccerMom wrote:I had to go outside to pick up Maddie and take Zap to pee and just being out for five minutes made my lungs burn.
Maddie was hungry when I picked her up from the Law School, so I bought her McDonalds. (We never go to McDonalds, but it was close and they had a drive through.) Zap was in the car with me, so he got a plain hamburger. He enjoyed the meat, but I didn't let him eat the bun.

I didn't realize how close you were to the fires, PSM. I hope you and the family continue to stay safe.PlacentiaSoccerMom wrote:I can't see the fire from my bedroom because it's moving towards Diamond Bar, away from us. I've been out of town (in NYC) the last 10 days, and the reports I've read don't show the fires in my area of LA. My brother lives near me, so I'm sure he would have called me if there was any danger. The red flag alerts are a big deal in my area due to the narrowness of the streets, and the Griffith Park fires last year really made the air nice and chewy where I live.
All my best wishes to anyone else who's affected. The fires in SoCal seem to be getting worse every year.

It's the fact that the photo is in a pyramid. Makes it stretch out even wider....kayrharris wrote:Why is this thread so w i d e on my screen? Is it the photo that's doing it?

Re: Fires in SoCal
The fires are 19% contained this morning. I took Zap out for a long walk this morning and the air has cleared up a lot. My throat didn't burn and he didn't wheeze. The wind is very light this morning, which will probably be nice for firefighters, though it is still dry and hot. It's supposed to be 88 degrees today. Yeah, this is winter in Southern California.

It sounds like things are starting to get better. I am glad you are okay and didn't need your evacuation plan!! Do you have a lot of cleanup to do from the ash and smoke?

My driveway and cars are covered in ash so they will have to be cleaned. I will have to hose off my patio furniture and I figure that the ash on the lawn will get picked up when it's mowed. My windows really need to be cleaned as well.

Same conditions here in the San Fernando Valley. SO glad to hear that you all made it through ok. The air quality was absolutely horrible here all weekend, and there was no blue sky at all, only brown.PlacentiaSoccerMom wrote:sunflower wrote:It sounds like things are starting to get better.
