Election trivia question

#1 Post by Bob Juch » Fri Nov 14, 2008 6:33 pm

Which state (not counting D.C.) had the highest percentage of votes for Obama?

So when do we find out the answer? I don't want to look it up.

Here's an interesting challenge. What percentage of the vote would you guess McCain/Palin won in Maverick County, Texas? No Googling or other resources. I'll post the correct answer sometime tomorrow.

Is it okay if I looked up where the County is located? I hope so, because I did.

Is this the county where you live, Confessor? I'm just wondering.

Asking me whether I live in Maverick County would fall under the "no Googling or other resources" prohibition. But we have pretty much established that Calvinator does not live there.

I meant to add that the maverick ticket of McCain/Palin got 56% of the overall Texas vote, in case that offers any clue about their results in Maverick County.

I wasn't sure if the "no Googling" rule applied to the peripheral facts or the ultimate answer.

But, since I obviously did not adhere to the spirit of the challenge, I voluntarily disqualify myself.

Okay, since there are only three people around who expressed an interest, I'll reveal the answer.

Cal was closest, but I have to penalize him for not knowing where Maverick County is. Bob was also close, and somehow knew that Eagle Pass is in Maverick County. I guess he must have lived there at some point. Kay gets credit for participation and for making a strategic, though incorrect guess.

County........Obama..............McCain...........Vote Margin
Maverick......8,554 (78.2%)......2,316 (21.2%)...6,238

I just thought it was interesting that Maverick County voters were so unswayed by the self-proclaimed mavericks. Texas has 254 counties. 28 of them voted for Obama. I live in Travis, the county that contributed the largest winning margin to the Obama total (in total number of votes, but not in percentage). Here are the 28 Obama counties:

I think Cal lives in Kaufman County, which went for McCain by 67.36% to 31.67%. The official results show that Hillary Clinton got 28 write in votes in Kaufman County. Bill Cosby got 3 votes. Willie Nelson and Montel Williams each got one vote.

Thanks for playing.

Thanks, Ed. I'm used to coming in dead last. I was at a distinct disadvantage by not
living in Texas now or having lived in every state at some or another.

I've never lived there but have driven though. I have cousins in my family tree who lived there. I always look up counties when the genealogical information I'm given has just the city.

Somewhat in the context of this thread, whence derives the set of paint choices that according to the inevitably correct source Wiki included these following elements, and others?

Anti-Establish Mint
Hulla Blue
Freudian Gilt
Original Cinnamon
Thanks Vermillion
Raven Black
Wimbledon White
Candyapple Red

I wondered if Maverick County might be the home of the original Maverick Family -- long known for their progressive politics! A little research showed that it's not -- they're based around San Antonio -- but the county is named for Samuel Maverick, the Maverick who brought his family to Texas.
