If nominated, will she accept?

That's a pretty powerful list of nominees for Sec. of State that Obama has--Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, and Bill Richardson. Any one of them would do a superb job at the State Department.

Hell, anybody would be an improvement from the schoolmarm who's running the place now.

NPR is very slow. I started hearing about this yesterday. She flew to Chicago yesterday.

I don't want to see her as Secretary of State; she has a different agenda. Richardson would be best, but I think he wants the Department of Energy.

NM "insiders" (maybe make that gossipers) say Richardson wanted Secretary of State all along, even as he was announcing for President.

I would like to see Richardson in that slot.

BJ:

It may be ghostjmf that is slow, not NPR; I haven't been able to listen as much as I used to be, back when I had a life. They may have been saying this before, but I just heard it 1st when I posted.

Could be. You can have a life between 5 PM and 8 AM. :P

I would rather be a Senator than a Secretary of State, but that's just me.

Larry Sabato confirmed last night that she has been offered the job. I trust his sources. We should know early in the week whether or not she accepts.

His take is that she should accept. She will not be given Majority Leader where she will be free to be campaigning against him in the hopes of wresting away the nomination in four years, Kennedy-Carter style. The only other thing she could possibly have been offered was Supreme Court. Either low-level Senate or high-level outside the Senate but beholden to him.

Plus he says she'll be too old to be a viable candidate in 8 years, so just take it.

I was at Mickey Dee's last night before work. They have CNN on the TV, but keep it muted...

On the screen I saw it sai d "Breaking News Alert", and under it something to the effect of Hillary Clinton announces she has no announcement about the SoS speculation...

WTF? Since when is no news breaking news?

It was funny though, because a Billy Mays commercial came on later. I swear even when he's muted you can hear his annoying ass.....

I would have swapped with you beforehand, but it turned out to be an enjoyable evening. At least our table wasn't terribly Codgerfied, and we met a guy from our neighborhood whose kids go to the other snooty private school, so we hadn't met before. He had brought his daughter who was captain of the powerhouse field hockey team that FINALLY got defeated by Stephen's school in the tournament after like a quarter-century of losing, and Demon Child's sister is on the team. So we had a little rivalry going there. Plus I met one of those plastic surgeons you always see advertising, and he was a really nice guy. Doesn't do leg veins, though. Rats.

Sabato is quite funny.

Won't NY lose a Demo senate seat if HRC accepts?

I need to retake Civics 101. I don't know what they'll do with the Obama, Biden and, Clinton seats...

That depends on how NY replaces a Senator. If the Governor appoints, then they hold the seat. If it's a special election, then it will depend on who wins.

Governor Paterson, a Democrat, would name her replacement. Given the trend in New York (Democrats just took over the State Senate for the first time in living memory), I think he'll have little trouble finding someone for whom re-election is relatively safe.

Delaware will be a little more complicated purely as a timing matter, but the complications shouldn't affect the partisan breakdown. Both Governor Minner and her successor are Democrats. Governor Minner's term ends on January 20, I believe at the stroke of midnight (between the 19th and the 20th). So if Senator Biden waits until the morning of the 20th to resign his Senate seat, the incoming Governor gets the appointment. If he resigns earlier, Governor Minner appoints his replacement. Either way, the replacement will have to run in 2010 for the remaining four years of the term. --Bob

Both! Patterson would appoint her replacement, but in 2010 there'd be a special election.

When Hillary officially lost the nomination, the first thing I thought was Secretary of State. She would be great.
